With over 769,000 cybersecurity job openings in the U.S. alone, there's no denying the talent shortage plaguing the industry. On a recent episode of This Week in Enterprise Tech, hosts Lou Maresca, Brian Chee, and Curtis Franklin tackled this pressing problem alongside guest Scott Evers of Involta.

In the "News Byte" segment, the team explored various strategies organizations are trying to recruit and train cybersecurity talent. Although it's offered each week to show guests, many of them opt not to join in on the news byte discussion segment. On this occasion, Evers joined the discussion and highlighted the value of retraining internal staff, like moving strong developers into security roles. Our TWiET hosts acknowledged internal dynamics can stall these cross-trainings with departments and potentially lead to losing top performers. Broadening candidate screening beyond degrees and certifications is also discussed. With so few entry-level opportunities, Chee argued that retired law enforcement and military often possess the ideal security mindset, which could be useful.

In the end, the hosts concluded that with hundreds of thousands of openings, there is simply no way to train our way out of the cyber skills gap. Creative approaches to recruitment, training, and better utilizing technology will all be needed to build the next generation of security defenders. Check out the whole discussion here.
