This is the show where we talk about computers computers. What funny old, old fashioned phrase is that? Huh? We talk about computers smart phones, much more likely smart watches, tablets, the internet, home theater, digital photography, all of that stuff. You know, anything technology mm-hmm <affirmative>

Mikah Sargent (00:01:44):
That seems technology

Leo Laporte (00:01:46):
Forward. Yeah. I'm coming to you right now from dynamic island. <Laugh> in the beautiful south Pacific. My Sargent has returned from his vis voyage to Cupertino. Yes.

Mikah Sargent (00:02:00):
First time

Leo Laporte (00:02:01):
Was that your first

Mikah Sargent (00:02:02):
Time? It was my first time being invited there as a member of the press and attending an event. And it was not what I expected in some ways. And

Leo Laporte (00:02:14):
Well, tell me, tell me,

Mikah Sargent (00:02:16):
Yeah, I mean, here's the thing I knew going into it, that it was going to be most likely us watching TV. Yeah, yeah. And

Leo Laporte (00:02:26):
Big screen TV, but TV.

Mikah Sargent (00:02:27):
Yeah. Big screen TV. Very great color. Scott Wilkinson would be impressed. I'm sure. But I

Leo Laporte (00:02:34):
Actually next time, would you find out what kind of screen it is?

Mikah Sargent (00:02:36):
I will, I will

Leo Laporte (00:02:38):
Behind it or something and say, Hey dude, is it micro L led D mini L E D. What do you got there?

Mikah Sargent (00:02:43):
I'm looking like, is there a projector somewhere? Is this just a huge screen? Yeah. so that part was really cool. Of course. Tim cook stepped out before the show had, did

Leo Laporte (00:02:51):
He say good

Mikah Sargent (00:02:52):
Morning? He said, good morning before he even said good morning. Good. And did make a, a note that on TV. Yeah, exactly three three years since anyone had been in it's kinda amazing

Leo Laporte (00:03:02):
Theater, you know, it's funny. That's exactly what Motley Cru said too. <Laugh>

Mikah Sargent (00:03:06):
They must have compared

Leo Laporte (00:03:08):
Notes. I saw them on on Wednesday and they said, oh, we've been waiting two years for this. So there you go. You know, and we haven't done anything for two and a half, three years. It's kind of sad.

Mikah Sargent (00:03:20):
Yeah. In the meantime, were

Leo Laporte (00:03:22):
There a lot of you, I saw you and Jason Snow wearing masks. Were there a lot of masks in evidence? No, no,

Mikah Sargent (00:03:28):
No. Most people weren't.

Leo Laporte (00:03:29):
None of the apple executives had masks on Uhuh

Leo Laporte (00:03:32):
Part of their, I think, propaganda campaign to get people to come back to work last week.

Mikah Sargent (00:03:36):
That may very well

Leo Laporte (00:03:37):
Come back to work. Everything's

Mikah Sargent (00:03:38):
Over look, we're all, we're all fine. Forget

Leo Laporte (00:03:40):
The 15,000 people who died last week. It's

Mikah Sargent (00:03:43):
Not, you know? Yeah. I just didn't feel comfortable. I, Jason being, did you wear it the whole time? No, only while we were in the Steve jobs theater outside Europe outside felt fine. And even in a few places where there were just fewer people around, I, I felt okay with

Leo Laporte (00:03:56):
That Nick six didn't wear mask either just yeah. Bass player for the market. Oh, gotcha. Gotcha. Crew the crew, the

Mikah Sargent (00:04:03):
Crew.

Leo Laporte (00:04:04):
Yeah. I'm just trying to, you know, compete with you. You obviously got the best ticket in town.

Mikah Sargent (00:04:11):
So here's the thing. I was not prepared for how much of a zoo

Leo Laporte (00:04:15):
It was, there were a lot of people. It was only a thousand people in this, in

Mikah Sargent (00:04:18):
A thousand people in theater. Were

Leo Laporte (00:04:20):
They all journalists or were there apple

Mikah Sargent (00:04:21):
People? No, it was, I would say quite a few apple people. Yeah. Sort of on the left side were the journalists on the right side? Were the, I don't know. All I know is I wasn't allowed over on the right side of the Steve jobs theater. Oh

Leo Laporte (00:04:33):
Really? They said, no, no, you

Mikah Sargent (00:04:34):
Can't go back. And then down below were employees and then the execs who were there to watch it. So yeah,

Leo Laporte (00:04:38):
They like to do that in the past. They've always done that because for two reasons, one to honor the people who put the work into the hardware. So Steve jobs used to introduce them, say stand up and they would stand up. The other reason, a little more cynical. They like to get some applause and journalists are supposed to sit on their hands.

Mikah Sargent (00:04:55):
This Leo I've gotta tell you look it up. The Missouri school of journalism in Columbia, Missouri is one of the premier journalism schools in the country. It's where I went. I was instilled,

Leo Laporte (00:05:05):
You're a trained journalist.

Mikah Sargent (00:05:06):
I was instilled with journalistic principles. Nice. And so I have to tell you that a lot of what I saw there made me uncomfortable. Yeah. it

Leo Laporte (00:05:13):
It's really a fanboy summit of journalists. Yes. Journalist fanboy. Well,

Mikah Sargent (00:05:17):
That's the thing. I don't feel comfortable calling many of them journalists because that word has, has meaning to me. And so there were a lot of folks there who were news reporters for sure. Who were like waiting in line to take a photo with Tim cook and all of that kind of, I don't, I don't dig that vibe. I don't think we should make celebrities out of people who were heads of companies. And I, I felt that part of it kind of was just like, ah, I, I can't be part of that. <Laugh>

Leo Laporte (00:05:44):
Well, especially if you're there to cover the technology objectively yes.

Mikah Sargent (00:05:48):
The stuff that people are going to spend their hard earned money on. Yeah. And that is what I, I think is, you know, I wanted to keep in mind the whole time and talking about it. And the other thing that did surprise me was I had expected that the people who were giving the demos, giving the briefs would be very trained and very knowledgeable about things. And I ended up asking a curve ball of a question apparently because the person had to flag down this other person who then had to go and find the person who could answer, answer my question. And here was my question. Leo, the new AirPods pro the second generation yeah. Comes with four sizes of ear tips. Yes. Now they make an extra small, yes. You can buy those separately. One of our followers ask me can I buy the extra small ear tips and use them with my first gen AirPods? Oh, good question. So I went over to the person.

Leo Laporte (00:06:41):
I had no idea who

Mikah Sargent (00:06:41):
Was doing the AirPods pro and she was like, I, I just really don't wanna give you the wrong answer. And then it's not right. Well,

Leo Laporte (00:06:46):
That's okay. Credit's credit

Mikah Sargent (00:06:47):
There credit that she didn't want to give the wrong answer, but I just thought surely that, you know, I, I expected that they knew a little bit more than they did

Leo Laporte (00:06:54):
My guess is that they do fit. Right. I mean, they're not, they don't, they don't,

Mikah Sargent (00:06:58):
They, they, well, here's what I'll say. They're not officially compatible. Okay. But what I'm gonna do,

Leo Laporte (00:07:03):
That's just a little rubber thing that you could stretch over the, but

Mikah Sargent (00:07:06):
It's got, it's got like this these four little clasps that are built into the first gen AirPods. And I don't know if it's the same for the second, so I will be trying it. I did personally purchase some second gen air pods. The Silicon tips. No, no. The second gen pods pro, which will come with extra sauce.

Leo Laporte (00:07:19):
Also those purchase those too. So

Mikah Sargent (00:07:21):
I'll be able to give,

Leo Laporte (00:07:22):
You could see. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, that's good. Cuz I, my wife among others say I don't wear those cuz they're too big for my little shell. Like ears. You have small ears. Yeah.

Mikah Sargent (00:07:33):
I, but the small work for me still, but yeah, apparently they're

Leo Laporte (00:07:37):
Put extra small in there. I think that's, that's a small thing to do. Literally.

Mikah Sargent (00:07:40):
They must have heard that. That was a tiny

Leo Laporte (00:07:42):
Little feature. More importantly, those air put twos will have the new Bluetooth Le 5.2 and we think LC three Kodak, which makes, should make it sound better. Both the music and you should sound better on calls.

Mikah Sargent (00:07:55):
Yes. And I think I, I did not know that AirPods pro are Apple's most popular headphones.

Leo Laporte (00:08:03):
I was surprised he, somebody said that Tim or something. Yeah. Tim mm-hmm <affirmative> and I was surprised to hear that cuz those are the most expensive 250 bucks.

Mikah Sargent (00:08:10):
Yeah. I thought for sure it would just be the standard AirPods. Yeah. but yeah, the AirPods pro and I will tell you too, I was shocked at shocked. I think of you shocked. I tell you at the way that the audience reacted for the AirPods pro segment, I thought it'd be a little bit more quiet than it was, but everyone was Ooh.

Leo Laporte (00:08:27):
Ah, E so we didn't watching at home, watching the stream. Didn't hear what was going on in the theater. They just played the stream mm-hmm <affirmative> so we didn't hear the applause of the OOS or the OS. There was quite a bit of that.

Mikah Sargent (00:08:38):
Huh? Quite a bit of cause some, some applause, but I gotta tell you the best moment was when they first said the words dynamic island and the whole audience laughed, they laughed, laughed. Everybody thought like, sh are you really calling it? That was how the laugh sounded like, come on the dynamic island, <laugh> playing

Leo Laporte (00:08:56):
The plane. So I think the general reaction in the outside world has been ho hum incremental improvements. This is kind of the way it's been for the last few years. Apple's not gonna make any leaps because well, we're, they've got, they've figured it out. There's nothing new under the sun. And it's hard to think of something new, but there were a few interesting new things. And dynamic island is one of them

Mikah Sargent (00:09:18):
That was such a clever way of, I don't know if it, you know, was on necessarily on purpose, but a lot of the stuff we know when it comes to hardware leaks ahead of time, we know about what's gonna be happening. And so we knew that there was gonna be likely a new punch design, meaning that at the top of the screen, you would have two different cutouts, but apple found a way to use software to meld with that hardware, to create this unique kind of dynamic area at the top of the screen and mask. The fact that you had these two cutouts

Leo Laporte (00:09:47):
It's, it's kind of making lemonade out of lemons, Uhhuh. They have to do that whole punch to the camera. They can't yet see through the screen. So the camera can see you. But I think they've done something quite interesting. And this is the first new user interface feature in a smartphone in a long time. Very long time. Yeah. So I think it is kind of interesting. That

Mikah Sargent (00:10:07):
Was probably my favorite moment. Overall, aside from the fact that now AirPods pro you can swipe to turn up and down the volume. <Laugh>

Leo Laporte (00:10:14):
You know, I was surprised that you couldn't do that before. Yeah. That I thought you could. Oh

Mikah Sargent (00:10:20):
Really? Yeah.

Leo Laporte (00:10:20):
Oh, that's funny. So I didn't even, that was like, well, what?

Mikah Sargent (00:10:22):
That was the one time where I actually said something out

Leo Laporte (00:10:25):
Loud, cast out loud. And

Mikah Sargent (00:10:26):
Can I tell you about the most embarrassing moment of the event? Yeah. They're talking about the series eight apple watch, right? Mm-Hmm <affirmative> series eight, series eight, series eight. Mm-Hmm <affirmative> my phone at top volume decides that.

Leo Laporte (00:10:38):
Hello

Mikah Sargent (00:10:38):
Siri. Hello, Siri and proceeds to respond at top volume in this theater. Oh. And

Leo Laporte (00:10:45):
Did people stare at

Mikah Sargent (00:10:45):
You? Well, Jason did. Jason Nell was sitting beside

Leo Laporte (00:10:48):
You. He was sitting next to you.

Mikah Sargent (00:10:49):
Most other people couldn't hear it cuz it was loud enough, but normally you hit that side button and it quiets it down right in the middle of my panic. I'm accidentally screaming, turning it up, shutting over and I

Leo Laporte (00:10:58):
Screen shutting

Mikah Sargent (00:10:58):
It. So it's just keeps going, talking. Oh, I was horrifying. Not

Leo Laporte (00:11:03):
My, not, not look. I've been embarrassed at apple events too. It's okay. You'll survive. You may never be invited back. Yeah. You'll survive.

Mikah Sargent (00:11:09):
That was the end of it. There was another person there who after every time they would announce a new spec for the iPhone. Yeah. The person would say, wow. And they did it perfectly timed with the pauses. So the theater was quiet and you just hear, wow, the iPhone is now waterproof. Wow. Wow. It's got 512. Wow.

Leo Laporte (00:11:25):
A wa this person was a wa this was intentionally. They

Mikah Sargent (00:11:28):
Were in the press area

Leo Laporte (00:11:29):
Mocking the maybe they were serious. I

Mikah Sargent (00:11:32):
Don't, I don't know if it was sort of a cultural thing. They were they, it was odd when they came in. They've made it very clear that they were from a different country ah,

Leo Laporte (00:11:39):
By maybe that's how they do it in that country.

Mikah Sargent (00:11:42):
I, yeah, I don't know. But they just were very appreciative. It's sort of like smacking your lips when you eat food or burping in some places, you know, it's like, wow. You know, it's good. Wow.

Leo Laporte (00:11:50):
So two, four new phones, the iPhone iPhone plus iPhone 14, iPhone 14 plus iPhone pro 14 pro iPhone 14 pro max mm-hmm. <Affirmative> no real surprises. Everything else that was rumored was there. We weren't sure if they'd have satellite emergency features. They do. They do. That was quite impressive. Although, since we haven't tried it, in fact, I don't know how we're gonna review it without calling helicopters down to save us. That's a good this could be good if it works, you know, they're doing a deal with global star, not SpaceX to do

Mikah Sargent (00:12:22):
This. In fact, got

Leo Laporte (00:12:23):
Spacex deal.

Mikah Sargent (00:12:25):
They're sort of they're investing. What was it like millions of dollars. They're

Leo Laporte (00:12:29):
Gonna spend the money that will take to launch new rockets to support this apple feature will be 95% paid by apple. Wow. And they got the money. Oh, I just,

Mikah Sargent (00:12:38):
They'll

Leo Laporte (00:12:38):
A few rockets. Wow. See? Yeah, it is. Wow. <laugh> you know, you can't, you

Mikah Sargent (00:12:42):
Can't help. Can't help it. Sometimes it just goes out.

Leo Laporte (00:12:44):
Incidentally scooter X tells me according to tweet from mark Kerman that the phrase dynamic island was trademarked. Oh, in Jamaica, on July 12th. It wasn't discovered because you can only search for trademarks filed in Jamaica by going to Jamaica's trademark and patent office. So nobody noticed now they also mentioned new AirPods, as we mentioned, the AirPod pro two, not no AirPods three are still AirPods three. And the wa the watch, the series eight watch, and then the ultra ultra, which we didn't know they were gonna call it that yeah. You tried on the ultra.

Mikah Sargent (00:13:22):
I did. So that was the one I got the most hands on time with. It, and so the apple watch ultra is a titanium watch. That is a lot bigger. And it is all for these folks are trying to, you know, they're adventuring are, are stepping out.

Leo Laporte (00:13:39):
I ordered one.

Mikah Sargent (00:13:39):
Yeah. I'm actually really excited for you because I think I was telling you this in,

Leo Laporte (00:13:44):
Well, now I can go scuba diving down to a hundred meters.

Mikah Sargent (00:13:46):
I actually I'm looking into getting scuba certified, but are you,

Leo Laporte (00:13:50):
Well, you should get one too.

Mikah Sargent (00:13:51):
Oh, I've I'm. I've got the series eight. I I'm just getting this. Let's

Leo Laporte (00:13:54):
Go. We should, we should split the difference. You're getting the purple iPhone 14. Promax I presume yes. Yes. I'm getting, I was forced to the gold, the gold. It was the only color that was available. Fortunately, I'll be putting it in the case. Yeah,

Mikah Sargent (00:14:07):
Exactly. Saying like

Leo Laporte (00:14:08):
It, you like my gold iPhone.

Mikah Sargent (00:14:10):
But I think it's gonna look good back to the ultra. I think it's gonna look great on your wrist and, well,

Leo Laporte (00:14:14):
I'm a big person, so it might not look so clunky. It looked kind of big on you. You also said it was lighter than one

Mikah Sargent (00:14:20):
Perspective. I could not believe it, honestly. And I'm not, I'm not, this is not me getting STARI or anything like that. Well,

Leo Laporte (00:14:25):
You weren't alone. That's titanium is a very lightweight,

Mikah Sargent (00:14:27):
Titanium is very lightweight. And the trail band that they came, that it came with attached. Oh. Is also very lightweight.

Leo Laporte (00:14:33):
I got the dive band that

Mikah Sargent (00:14:35):
That's a cool band. That's a cool

Leo Laporte (00:14:37):
Band. That's how I'm going. Diving. Yeah. 88, 88. Ask Leo. Well, if the room fills up with water, I'll be at least able to tell you what time I tied. <Laugh> eighty eight, eighty eight. Ask Leo the phone number. Michael Sargent Leo. Leport your tech guys will go to your calls right after this. It does not come with a chin strap.

Mikah Sargent (00:15:08):
<Laugh> I was telling Lisa, if, should I be invited back in the future? You will be. I'm going to, you will

Leo Laporte (00:15:15):
Be you you're now you're now part of the fam

Mikah Sargent (00:15:17):
I need to, did

Leo Laporte (00:15:18):
You go wow. After every spec <laugh>

Mikah Sargent (00:15:20):
No, they heard me so that I did that on purpose. Yeah, no, I I'm gonna want to hopefully if you'll allow me borrow a camera that has a zoom lens. Oh yeah. Yeah, because that was the most difficult part of everything was edging past all these other people.

Leo Laporte (00:15:33):
There are a lot of, so a thousand people doesn't sound like a lot, but even the pictures I saw looked pretty crowded.

Mikah Sargent (00:15:37):
Very, I mean, I was honestly surprised at how little structure there was to the hands on area. I was not expecting. Oh,

Leo Laporte (00:15:47):
It was just like a mob. It's

Mikah Sargent (00:15:48):
Just a,

Leo Laporte (00:15:48):
Yeah. You don't line

Mikah Sargent (00:15:49):
Up. No, you don't line up at all. Yeah. And in fact, it was kind of like how some people, when a movie ends, they like to be the first ones out before the lights had dimmed or had gone back up after

Leo Laporte (00:15:59):
Were running. They were

Mikah Sargent (00:16:00):
Running, running. Yeah. To get there first,

Leo Laporte (00:16:01):
See, this is because you no longer have journalists going. You have YouTube celebrities. That

Mikah Sargent (00:16:05):
Was a

Leo Laporte (00:16:06):
Influence. And these people have no coth.

Mikah Sargent (00:16:10):
And in fact Leo that I, I kind of did see that I, if you look around, I could see, oh, there are people I know that are journalists. Yeah. And they're sort of like hanging

Leo Laporte (00:16:18):
Back. Yeah. Doing the right thing.

Mikah Sargent (00:16:19):
Yeah. And it was, I mean, I got into a couple of times, there was one time that I, I did get a little upset because I, I felt a little treated almost like I was some sort of out

Leo Laporte (00:16:31):
The way object.

Mikah Sargent (00:16:32):
Yeah.

Leo Laporte (00:16:32):
Because you're, in my way, I've got links to click.

Mikah Sargent (00:16:34):
Well, it was these two photographers who were trying to film an exec and they, I was facing this way. The exec was behind me and the one stood right here and the other stood right here. So close in my space, both not wearing masks. And the one guy nearly used my shoulder, like a tripod or like a monopod sort of resting his arm on me to be able to take a photo.

Leo Laporte (00:16:55):
And here's the picture of the photo. Yeah.

Mikah Sargent (00:16:58):
<Laugh> might as well

Leo Laporte (00:16:59):
Offend I Justine and Tim cook. Yeah. Well, to her, I guess Justine's never claimed to be a journalist. Right.

Mikah Sargent (00:17:08):
And I'm not, I am not sliding the folks who that I was talking about specifically my own feelings. No, I'm with you. I just, it doesn't feel I'm

Leo Laporte (00:17:16):
With you for me. I'm I think it's not right for us. And it's one of the reasons I don't mind not going to these events. They kind of make me queasy. Now they really become fan fests. Mm-Hmm <affirmative> yeah.

Mikah Sargent (00:17:27):
And that's why I definitely tried to turn it toward seeing the responses that people are having live. The people are asking me questions. Yeah. And I think that Matthew Panzano does a good job of that too.

Leo Laporte (00:17:35):
Yeah. I think PSO was pretty good about holding back, I would imagine.

Mikah Sargent (00:17:40):
Yeah. And, and just answering people's S

Leo Laporte (00:17:41):
He gets access to everybody anyway. Yeah. So he doesn't, he's no rush for him, but there, but the, what, the vloggers and the bloggers and the YouTubers are trying to just get the first hands on, you know, ours technically had a hands on. They said, well, after a couple of minutes, we were able to <laugh> it's like, come on, you had, you had, you had, they actually didn't say minutes. They had moments. They had several moments with the new iPhone. We have this to report. It's like, yeah, no, thank you. Anyway, so anyway, there we go. Yeah, yeah. Yep. Yeah. I like dynamic island.

Mikah Sargent (00:18:14):
I do too. I think it grew on me

Leo Laporte (00:18:16):
In fact, Andy and NACO said and he's no you know, fanboy. He said this is a, probably a very important new user interface.

Mikah Sargent (00:18:29):
I imagine

Leo Laporte (00:18:30):
For a while, yeah. It's one of the reasons I wanted to, I'm actually gonna have to drive down to Marin on Friday to get this phone, this gold phone. So there was the only phone left in, in the, within the hundred miles.

Mikah Sargent (00:18:42):
<Laugh> holy moly. Yeah. I didn't order the apple watch until the day after.

Leo Laporte (00:18:46):
That's the 23rd.

Mikah Sargent (00:18:48):
Yeah. And so I, you

Leo Laporte (00:18:50):
What's, is it delayed to pass the 23rd?

Mikah Sargent (00:18:52):
No. So I,

Leo Laporte (00:18:52):
So they said the 23rd it's interest, same thing. I ordered AirPods pro

Mikah Sargent (00:18:56):
To your watch. Won't be available until the 23rd mine.

Leo Laporte (00:18:59):
Oh, it would've been 16th.

Mikah Sargent (00:19:00):
So I'm getting, get mine on the 17th. No. Yeah. The 17th, after, after we're done with the tech guy, that's fine. I have to go and get

Leo Laporte (00:19:06):
It. I'll have my dive watch in two weeks.

Mikah Sargent (00:19:08):
Yes.

Leo Laporte (00:19:09):
Let me diving perfect song for Kim Schaffer. The phone angel buzz buzz. The phone is ranging. Hello, Kim Schaffer. Hello? Good to see you.

Kim Schaffer (00:19:21):
You too. What's new.

Leo Laporte (00:19:22):
Well, I I, in two weeks, I will have a watch that will allow me to run a marathon bicycle for how many miles was it? 20 miles

Mikah Sargent (00:19:30):
Miles climb a mountain

Leo Laporte (00:19:32):
Climb, a mountain swim. All of that watch will survive. I shall not. <Laugh>

Kim Schaffer (00:19:38):
Makes me irritated. I just had to get a new watch in April.

Leo Laporte (00:19:42):
This is, this is apple competing with the garment, extreme sport watches and it's, and it's so silly because you know that most of the people who buy it will be me

Mikah Sargent (00:19:50):
Aspirational

Leo Laporte (00:19:52):
As aspirational that not even aspirational, we know perfectly well, we won't be doing any of those things.

Kim Schaffer (00:19:57):
No scuba for you.

Leo Laporte (00:19:58):
Those I love scuba. I do, but I wouldn't nowadays. I don't think I would go anymore. Cause I think it's for your young people. It's good at my age, you know, it's a very dangerous

Mikah Sargent (00:20:08):
Bens are more common. Well,

Leo Laporte (00:20:10):
That's now thanks to the apple watch, but will, by the way, fit over my

Mikah Sargent (00:20:13):
Dive

Leo Laporte (00:20:14):
Suit, dive suit. Cuz I got that. I got that band. So it'll go right

Mikah Sargent (00:20:18):
Over stretchy one.

Leo Laporte (00:20:19):
Yeah. The stretchy one go go right over that. I won't have to worry about the bands. The watch will say

Kim Schaffer (00:20:25):
You're getting the bands.

Leo Laporte (00:20:26):
You're get, you'll say don't stop. Whatever you're doing. Go home and go to bed because

Mikah Sargent (00:20:31):
What are you

Leo Laporte (00:20:32):
Doing out there? What are you doing? What are you doing? You're crazy. <Laugh> Kim. Who should we? Who should we, who should we talk to here?

Kim Schaffer (00:20:38):
Let's go to oh no, I can't see line one.

Leo Laporte (00:20:42):
What? You can't see what happened, John?

Kim Schaffer (00:20:44):
Oh, well,

Leo Laporte (00:20:44):
You know, are they tiny?

Kim Schaffer (00:20:45):
No, I, I compacted

Leo Laporte (00:20:47):
The screen. John and Leesburg, Virginia do not compact. The, whatever that means. <Laugh> do not do it.

Mikah Sargent (00:20:52):
That's cuz of high pressure underwater.

Leo Laporte (00:20:54):
<Laugh> oh, that's it. I have the bend. Your, your screen has the bends. Yeah. Get those nitrogen bubbles out. Thank you, Kim. You're welcome. Hello there John and Leesburg, Virginia. Leo LA poor. Michael Sargent. Good to talk to you.

Caller 1 (00:21:05):
Good to talk to you too. So I'm having a strange problem with Chrome where since I think the last update or something, the, the reader mode has disappeared and this is something I use all the time because I use screen readers and, and if I'm reading an article, then the reader mode is very nice. I enabled it with the flags and so forth. But now the flag seems to have disappeared too. So

Leo Laporte (00:21:36):
I, I love reader mode. I don't, I haven't used it on Chrome, but I've used it on a safari and I think it's a, a great feature. What happened to reader modes? Any, do you know MIkah?

Mikah Sargent (00:21:46):
I'm gone that it did disappear, but there's a way to get it back.

Leo Laporte (00:21:51):
Oh hallelujah. Oh yeah,

Mikah Sargent (00:21:52):
Yeah. Yeah. So I'm trying to find, oh, it's in the Chrome flags.

Leo Laporte (00:21:56):
Oh no. So this means you gotta go. The flag

Caller 1 (00:21:59):
Is, the flag is gone.

Mikah Sargent (00:22:00):
The flag is gone.

Caller 1 (00:22:03):
I, I tried to find the flag and it's not there.

Leo Laporte (00:22:07):
So the technique here is you go to the address bar, the, the URL bar and you type Chrome, colon slash slash flags. And then you can do a search. Now, maybe you don't search for reader anymore. What is the Chrome flag? Is it reader?

Mikah Sargent (00:22:20):
So this was an article from may. Oh

Leo Laporte (00:22:23):
See.

Caller 1 (00:22:23):
That's no good because it was fine. Then this, this just happened.

Mikah Sargent (00:22:27):
What is the current version of Chrome? Because according to

Leo Laporte (00:22:31):
Four

Mikah Sargent (00:22:31):
Google, it was supposed to return in Chrome 1 0 2. Oh. So if we're on one. Oh it

Caller 1 (00:22:36):
Should. It did. It was fine then.

Mikah Sargent (00:22:39):
Huh? So that it's gone again. Is what you're saying.

Leo Laporte (00:22:41):
What is, why don't they want reader mode? Oh, I know why there's no ads in it. Uhhuh

Caller 1 (00:22:46):
That's oh,

Leo Laporte (00:22:48):
Oh. And Google, which of course really has tried in so many ways to make money in every possible way and has failed except for selling ads

Mikah Sargent (00:22:58):
Might have to use an extension.

Leo Laporte (00:23:00):
Yeah. I'm looking every in March. You could bring it back. I, I see this, but I don't see anything modern. Let's we'll see if we can keep listening. If you will, John. We'll see what we can do. Leo Laport, mic Sargent you're tech guys. Okay. So somebody are you outta sync? Are you using 1 0 5?

Mikah Sargent (00:23:22):
Yeah. I don't have Chrome on this cause I like to keep

Leo Laporte (00:23:24):
It pure. Where do I have Chrome? Where do I have Chrome? Do I have Chrome? I have Chrome on here. I don't know if, if it's different from the Mac. Let me open Chrome set Chrome as your default browser. No help. Chrome. Get better by saving all these, sending all your stuff to Google. No.

Mikah Sargent (00:23:42):
Oh, there is a flag that you can use. Yeah. there's a flag called temporarily unexpired. M 1 0 4 flags. And if you unexpired those M 1 0 4 flags, then reader mode will come back.

Leo Laporte (00:23:58):
So let's see here. So I can't just enter reader. Well, wait a minute. You've

Mikah Sargent (00:24:05):
Got

Leo Laporte (00:24:05):
It. I've got it here. And this is on a Mac. Let me see what version of Chrome we're using. Maybe, maybe I don't have a, a recent version of Chrome. Where does Chrome hide this now about Google Chrome. I had 1 0 4 let's let's let's relaunch and see if this is good. This is a good test. Yes, because now I'm launching 1 0 5. Now we'll go to Chrome. Colon flag slash slash <laugh>. Same thing. Dynamic island, Chrome experiments. Let's search for reader. Experimental accessibility

Mikah Sargent (00:24:47):
Language. Okay, good. It's gone. Yeah,

Leo Laporte (00:24:48):
It's gone. Wow. So now they GED it from 1 0 4 to 1 0 5

Mikah Sargent (00:24:52):
Type in M 1 0 4 and then turn that

Leo Laporte (00:24:56):
Temporarily. Unexpired flags expired as of M 1 0 4. These flags will be removed soon. Anyway.

Mikah Sargent (00:25:04):
So enable that one

Leo Laporte (00:25:06):
Enable temporarily and relaunch and now readers should be here. Right?

Mikah Sargent (00:25:12):
Nowledge check of reader. Is there? Da,

Leo Laporte (00:25:13):
Da, da. Okay. So boy, that's, we'll go through that. That's absurd. That is absurd. That's absurd. Babo? Yeah. Just use edge. <Laugh> do you use

Mikah Sargent (00:25:29):
Edge? I use safari

Leo Laporte (00:25:31):
On, on windows. Oh, on windows. Oh, you're on a Mac now I use Firefox. I thought you were on,

Mikah Sargent (00:25:36):
On windows. I use Firefox.

Leo Laporte (00:25:39):
Yeah, me too. I use Firefox even on, even on Mac, I use Firefox.

Mikah Sargent (00:25:43):
Firefox is my, if it's not working in safari, I go to Firefox on Mac. Yeah. And then on windows, it's just Firefox. And then occasionally I'll use the

Leo Laporte (00:25:51):
Ice. I feel that supporting safari is as good as the only reason I, well, I like safari. I

Mikah Sargent (00:25:56):
Just use it also because it's so good between devices. Yeah. That's

Leo Laporte (00:25:58):
The only reason. Yeah. Yeah. The sinking. Yeah. Yeah. So that's why I use it everywhere because

Mikah Sargent (00:26:03):
Yeah. Firefox is sinking is great too. Yeah.

Leo Laporte (00:26:05):
I saw the optical line judges at the us open. Oh yeah. But then they give 'em human voices and they have a variety of voices depending on how close it was. That's hysterical.

Mikah Sargent (00:26:14):
That's what Burke was telling me. Oh.

Leo Laporte (00:26:16):
Oh, it could be out maybe out, out <laugh>. I wonder if I could find line judge voices.

Mikah Sargent (00:26:23):
Oh, that'd be fun to add.

Leo Laporte (00:26:25):

Now back to the tech guy program, what is hip I'll tell you, man, this cat right here, he blows a hip horn. <Laugh> he is Scott Wilkin. If you consider the tuba hip horn, actually you blow a trumpet. Right?

Scott Wilkinson (00:30:17):
Well, I don't play much trumpet. No. If

Leo Laporte (00:30:21):
Trombone

Scott Wilkinson (00:30:21):
Is lower than trombone is a hip horn,

Leo Laporte (00:30:23):
Little bit hip hip

Scott Wilkinson (00:30:27):
Tuba is super hip man. Boom,

Leo Laporte (00:30:29):
Boom, boom, boom. <Laugh> Scott Wilkinson. He is not merely a horn man. He is the home theater geek joins us every week to talk about home theater. We, I, next time we were talking about the screen that they use at the Steve jobs theater.

Scott Wilkinson (00:30:46):
Yeah. I'm interested to know what kind that is. We're

Leo Laporte (00:30:48):
Gonna,

Mikah Sargent (00:30:49):
Somehow I'm going to ask someone sneak

Leo Laporte (00:30:51):
Back in <laugh> this is the kind of thing that would surpris.

Scott Wilkinson (00:30:53):
I went to micro L

Leo Laporte (00:30:54):
E D. That would get me blocked.

Scott Wilkinson (00:30:56):
Right, right.

Mikah Sargent (00:30:57):
I almost went over to the controlled place and took some photos, but then I thought, yeah, maybe not on my first visit. <Laugh> maybe not

Scott Wilkinson (00:31:03):
Your first time. Yeah, yeah, yeah,

Leo Laporte (00:31:05):
Yeah. So yeah. You would think that you would be surprised

Scott Wilkinson (00:31:08):
As micro micro L E D. Yeah. Micro is, especially if it was really big, right.

Leo Laporte (00:31:11):
It's pretty big. It's

Scott Wilkinson (00:31:13):
Huge jumbotron size. Almost

Leo Laporte (00:31:14):
An apple could afford that. What was Samsung's super screen. Oh, they could bucks that. Yeah, sure. It's nothing jump change. Yeah.

Scott Wilkinson (00:31:22):
No, but yeah, really

Leo Laporte (00:31:22):
Every seat in that theater cost, they

Scott Wilkinson (00:31:24):
On my couch cost

Leo Laporte (00:31:26):
$14,000. What? Oh,

Mikah Sargent (00:31:27):
May uncomfortable. But they look good. I kept having to move,

Leo Laporte (00:31:30):
But they look good. They

Mikah Sargent (00:31:31):
Look great. They're

Leo Laporte (00:31:32):
Like this Johnny I leather. Yeah. Johnny, I designed 'em it's the same leather used in somebody's executive jet. I can't remember who. Oh

Mikah Sargent (00:31:40):
Yeah. I thought there'd be a college.

Scott Wilkinson (00:31:42):
Be

Mikah Sargent (00:31:42):
Leather going on too. I sort of fold up desk.

Leo Laporte (00:31:45):
I could there's no desk, but there are plugs right there weren't even plugs. There weren't any USP

Mikah Sargent (00:31:49):
Probably in the facts. If you sit in the back row, there are, but where we were sitting, there were, oh man. I know. I thought, wait, hold on. Am I in the right place

Leo Laporte (00:31:55):
In the form follows form.

Mikah Sargent (00:32:00):
<Laugh> follows form

Leo Laporte (00:32:01):
Scott Wilkinson. What's new in the world of audio visual.

Scott Wilkinson (00:32:05):
Oh, well I've got a a nice, easy supposedly question from the Cubs man,

Leo Laporte (00:32:13):
The Cubs man,

Scott Wilkinson (00:32:15):
The Cubs man who might be a Cubs fan, who knows his wife and his wife. And he are TV shopping and they're, they were excited to get the Sony a 80 K 77 inch O lead, which is a 20, 22 model. Nice standard, beautiful full lead. Yeah. Beautiful TV. Yeah. But then he wonders. Should I be looking at the QD O lead, which is a 95 K

Leo Laporte (00:32:39):
Theoretically better, right.

Scott Wilkinson (00:32:41):
Theoretically. Oh yes. Well, there, there, I, I took a look at this and there are some interesting things to think about for one thing. The O led regular O led is quite a bit less expensive. He can get a 77 inch O led for I think it was 3000 bucks.

Leo Laporte (00:33:05):
And how much is the six hu led the

Scott Wilkinson (00:33:07):
Q huge deal led? Yeah, doesn't come in 77. It only comes in up to 65 and on peasant, on the Sony peasant. I know, I know.

Leo Laporte (00:33:17):
Oh please.

Scott Wilkinson (00:33:18):
<Laugh> okay. And on the, on the Sony

Leo Laporte (00:33:22):
Animals, <laugh>

Scott Wilkinson (00:33:24):
<Laugh> they, the, the 65 on the Sony website is discounted to 3,500 bucks. It's normally 4,000.

Leo Laporte (00:33:35):
Yeah. So it's a lot more expensive.

Scott Wilkinson (00:33:36):
So it's a lot more expensive for a month. Smaller, smaller size. Yeah. Yeah. Now I went and I went, I did one step further. I went to rs.com, RT, I N G s.com, which is a great TV review website. And they do a lot of comparisons and they have a comparison of the a 95 K and the a 80 K. And they obviously, they love the QD lead. The new QD led, which everybody loves, but they, they made mention of something that I had not heard before, which is, if it's in a bright room, you got a lot of ambient light in the room. The black level that that is that's famous, Ole is famous for having a zero black level, really super deep blacks rises. It actually comes up. There must be some sort of ambient light sensor.

Leo Laporte (00:34:31):
So they're brightening the screen.

Scott Wilkinson (00:34:32):
So you can they're brightening the screen. Yes. But you're also bright bringing up the black level, which you shouldn't do. And the old led does not do that. The standard O led,

Leo Laporte (00:34:44):
Oh, that's interesting. Not do that. So it sounds like you've come up with some very good reasons not to spend the extra thousand bucks.

Scott Wilkinson (00:34:51):
If, if you're going to put this TV in a room where a, a fair amount of time you're gonna spend watching with all the lights on mm-hmm <affirmative> I would say maybe not. Now it is brighter. The, the QD O led is like a couple, couple hundred knits brighter than the standard O led. So that compensates for the brightness in the room. But man, I wish it did not raise the black level at the same time. So it's, it's not quite as easy a question as I thought it was going to be when I first started looking into it, you know, I thought, oh, obviously the QD O led, well, except if you want a bigger picture. Right. You know, if you want that 77 inch, then the, the regular O LED's the only way to go. Yeah. And it's not gonna be quite as bright, but it's also not gonna bring up that black level, which to me is really important. I it's critical for contrast. Now that

Leo Laporte (00:35:47):
Contrast that's probably unique to Sony's panel. Right.

Scott Wilkinson (00:35:50):
Correct. The, the Samsung panel doesn't do it according toss.

Leo Laporte (00:35:54):
Okay. Wait, good on ours for catching that. Wow. Yeah.

Scott Wilkinson (00:35:59):
Yeah. I thought so too. I hadn't seen that anywhere else I had, I didn't hear about it from the flat panel shootout, the value electronics flat panel shootout that was couple months ago. I didn't hear it anywhere else, but ours brings it up and make sure, you know, this is something that happens just so that you're informed.

Leo Laporte (00:36:19):
Hmm. Hmm.

Scott Wilkinson (00:36:21):
So that's, that's an important,

Leo Laporte (00:36:22):
So I guess the recommendation is get the Sony plan old Lola, the 77 inch save money. If you want that, get

Scott Wilkinson (00:36:29):
A, I save money, get a bigger screen. Don't have the the raising black level.

Leo Laporte (00:36:35):
That sounds like something that is in the firmware

Scott Wilkinson (00:36:39):
Could be, could very well be I'm shocked if Sony in the QIO led did not provide a control. Yeah. It turns off the ambient light sensor. Yeah. And our thingss would've found it.

Leo Laporte (00:36:51):
Right.

Scott Wilkinson (00:36:52):
For sure. And they would've said something about it. They would've said, oh yeah, just go in here to this menu item and turn this off and you've solved the problem. Right. But apparently not. And that's shocking to me. Yeah. And that is a firmware thing you could, you could add that. I'm sure.

Leo Laporte (00:37:06):
Yeah.

Scott Wilkinson (00:37:07):
There's, there's no reason why you would, wouldn't be able to do that.

Leo Laporte (00:37:11):
Very good. We've solved that mystery.

Scott Wilkinson (00:37:13):
There you go. It was so weird. But for the larger screen, yeah, absolutely. The the Sony led or the LGC two that comes in into 77 inch as well. Sony hat probably has better video processing overall, generally speaking.

Leo Laporte (00:37:30):
Oh, interesting. Okay.

Scott Wilkinson (00:37:32):
So, but they're more expensive.

Leo Laporte (00:37:33):
There's so much to consider with all, with it, with all this there's so many variables.

Scott Wilkinson (00:37:38):
Yep. Afraid. So is

Leo Laporte (00:37:40):
Processing important if you're watching a native 4k HDR stream, I know we use processing for upscaling from 10 80 P right.

Scott Wilkinson (00:37:49):
Or lower, which if you're watching, if you're watching any kind of broadcast TV, then

Leo Laporte (00:37:54):
No, you do care about upscaling. But if you're only watching high quality only

Scott Wilkinson (00:37:57):
Watching high quality streaming, then it's, it's important for things like motion processing and stuff like that, but not

Leo Laporte (00:38:06):
For upstream. So there's still some going on,

Scott Wilkinson (00:38:08):
There's still something for the TV, the processor to do

Leo Laporte (00:38:11):
Well, now we have to get even more granular in our reviews. <Laugh> and talk about, you know, I mean, may you know, for all we know the Sony, processing's fine. On four KDR. It's just not for broadcast or something like that. Right,

Scott Wilkinson (00:38:23):
Right, right. Right. The other thing to keep in mind of course, is that Sony supports

Leo Laporte (00:38:27):
Doby vision. Right. That's important does not that we know is

Scott Wilkinson (00:38:30):
Important. That's really important.

Leo Laporte (00:38:31):
Yes. Yeah. Doby vision is the more common standard for high dynamic range,

Scott Wilkinson (00:38:36):
Much more common and

Leo Laporte (00:38:37):
Much more. It's not necessarily better. It's just that a lot of the content like on Disney plus for instance, you won't get H

Scott Wilkinson (00:38:44):
All like baby vision.

Leo Laporte (00:38:45):
Yeah. Right. Yeah, exactly. Unless you have Doby vision. Right, right. You have solved it all. What's what's your podcast about this week, youtube.com/avs forum.

Scott Wilkinson (00:38:56):
Yeah. We just we just did a whole hour and a half on the UST projector shootout. Remember I talked

Leo Laporte (00:39:02):
A couple weeks short throw projectors,

Scott Wilkinson (00:39:04):
Short throw projectors had a great discussion with the people in, who were in charge of that shootout. They did two of them. They did one with a single laser and one with triple laser. It's a very deep discussion. Really cool. You should go check it out.

Leo Laporte (00:39:18):
Scott Wilkinson home theater gate, youtube.com/avs forum every week right here, Leo and MIkah more coming up. So I guess it's time for the Scott Wilkinson show.

Scott Wilkinson (00:39:39):
<Laugh>

Leo Laporte (00:39:40):
Let me put you in the,

Scott Wilkinson (00:39:41):
In the, thank you so much, by the way, ne next week during the week, I'm going down to, I'm getting some sort of special press tour with a few journalists, hopefully real journalists. Wow.

Leo Laporte (00:39:55):
<Laugh> wow.

Scott Wilkinson (00:39:58):
Of the Harmon campus Harmon is now owned by Samsung, but they're gonna be introducing some new stuff for CIA, which is coming up end of September. I'm not going to CEDIA for the first time in must be 20, 25 years.

Leo Laporte (00:40:16):
Wow. Why not?

Scott Wilkinson (00:40:18):
Well, two reasons. One is it's in the middle of the Jewish high holidays and just before yam Kipur and I'm involved, I'm going down to LA to be involved in a program for that. And

Leo Laporte (00:40:31):
Somebody's got that so far is not gonna play itself.

Scott Wilkinson (00:40:34):
Somebody's gotta blow that so far. That's right. That's exactly right. And so going to CIA and racing back in time to do that, no. And I must admit I'm still a little uncomfortable with, at the thought of going to a trade show with a bunch of people. Mm-Hmm <affirmative>

Leo Laporte (00:40:51):
For several days this morning, by the way, mic. So don't oh, same. Don't worry. I'll I'm

Scott Wilkinson (00:40:55):
Not. Oh, good, good. Yeah. Mike, you were in the thousand

Leo Laporte (00:40:58):
And you were in a concert was in Steve jobs. Concert. Yeah. Steve

Mikah Sargent (00:41:02):
Jobs, concert, Motley crew concert. Mm-Hmm

Leo Laporte (00:41:05):
<Affirmative> mine was outside. At least you were indoors. Really surprised, surprised apple did that. Yeah. Yeah. But you wore a mask the whole time wore

Mikah Sargent (00:41:12):
Masks on those indoors

Scott Wilkinson (00:41:13):
While you were indoors. Yeah. See, I would do that at CIA too, but I've heard so many stories. Yeah. People who were fully vaccinated and fully boosted and wearing

Leo Laporte (00:41:20):
Masks, you know, it is it's the airplane in the airport. I'm convinced. I think so. I hear so many people getting sick from the flight. Yeah. I don't know. I don't know. So we don't, we still don't know where I, something ride sharing can be a you're in a car with somebody. Yeah. Yeah.

Scott Wilkinson (00:41:34):
Right, right. So anyway, that's, that's the other reason I'm not going to see you.

Leo Laporte (00:41:38):
Yeah, I understand.

Scott Wilkinson (00:41:40):
So but I am gonna go down to, to harm and I'm flying down to LA it's only an hour flight, you know, and go spend a little time with Harmon people. And hopefully if it's not under embargo could be able to come back next week and talk about that good

Leo Laporte (00:41:58):
Noise. I think increasingly it's less important to go to these events to be honest with you.

Scott Wilkinson (00:42:03):
Oh, I agree. I

Leo Laporte (00:42:04):
Agree. I'm making, I'm making, you know, apple juice out of, at a lemons, but I, I can't, I don't go. And so, you know, and I feel like I get, you know, I'm never gonna do C

Scott Wilkinson (00:42:14):
You get the information,

Leo Laporte (00:42:16):
The C it's just a nightmare. All of these things, right.

Scott Wilkinson (00:42:19):
Well, yes, it is. <Laugh> however, I will say on the positive side, that for me, the value of going to CES or CD is actual FaceTime with people that I normally don't get to see.

Leo Laporte (00:42:32):
Right. I,

Scott Wilkinson (00:42:33):
So, you know, they're my friends in the industry. I have no friends being able to hang out

Leo Laporte (00:42:36):
With them. Yeah. That's what's that I have no friends. So that's the difference. I have no

Scott Wilkinson (00:42:39):
Friends. Yeah. So yeah.

Leo Laporte (00:42:40):
There you go. And MIkah, do you feel like the hands on thing at the apple thing was,

Mikah Sargent (00:42:44):
I think it can. Yeah. I, I, I learned

Leo Laporte (00:42:47):
It's pretty brief though. Right? It was

Mikah Sargent (00:42:48):
Very brief. I, it all like hindsight, this is my first time I think that in the, in the future, I could get more value out of those moments,

Leo Laporte (00:42:56):
Knowing, knowing what to do, knowing what to do,

Mikah Sargent (00:42:58):
Get

Scott Wilkinson (00:42:58):
Those elbows by elbowing your way,

Mikah Sargent (00:43:01):
People, that kind of stuff. Yeah. Wearing a helmet and elbow pads. Right.

Scott Wilkinson (00:43:05):
Yeah. Right, right. And tackling people. Yes,

Mikah Sargent (00:43:08):
Exactly.

Scott Wilkinson (00:43:09):
<Laugh> good,

Leo Laporte (00:43:10):
Lord.

Scott Wilkinson (00:43:10):
Yeah. I, I, I, I, Mike, I was listening to your comments about journalism and I couldn't agree more. And the, the, whoever it was Leo, I think you mentioned, you know, said, well, we got to spend a few moments with this device and here's our thoughts on

Leo Laporte (00:43:24):
It. Yeah. I couldn't ours got a, a 1500 word article out of it. It's like, come on, man.

Scott Wilkinson (00:43:28):
Yeah. Yeah.

Leo Laporte (00:43:30):
And I like ours, but I, I don't think it's their fault. I think there's just so much pressure. Yeah,

Scott Wilkinson (00:43:34):
Exactly.

Mikah Sargent (00:43:35):
And you work with what you

Leo Laporte (00:43:36):
Have to write that article mm-hmm <affirmative> cause everybody else is writing and,

Scott Wilkinson (00:43:39):
And you have to put it up, you know, within moments of the event.

Leo Laporte (00:43:42):
Right. Which is why they're running.

Scott Wilkinson (00:43:43):
Right. That's the pressure I really don't like about online. I like a lot of things about online publishing, but that's not one of 'em. So

Mikah Sargent (00:43:48):
I like about what we do is that it didn't feel so urgent. That was kind of nice.

Leo Laporte (00:43:54):
Now this is singing <laugh> I like this. <Laugh> Leo LaPorte, Mike, a Sargent, your tech guys. We've done some research. We even tried it out. There is a way to get reader mode back. Yes. Temporarily in Chrome, 1 0 5 mm-hmm

Mikah Sargent (00:44:10):
<Affirmative> it's a little involved, but there's a flag called temporarily unexpired. M 1 0 4 flags.

Leo Laporte (00:44:18):
So I launched Chrome 1 0 4 on my Mac and I had the flag that said, reader, turn, you know, turn on. Yeah. And then I noticed I hadn't have the, the latest 1 0 5. So I said update and it was gone. It

Mikah Sargent (00:44:30):
Went away. Reader mode was gone. So

Leo Laporte (00:44:31):
They really have taken it out. Mm-Hmm

Mikah Sargent (00:44:33):
<Affirmative>. So by looking up that temporarily Onfi, M 1 0 4 flags, which you can just type in M 1 0 4 and find it very easily. You enable that. And then it tells you to relaunch Chrome, you relaunch Chrome and reader mode is back

Leo Laporte (00:44:46):
So temporarily though. They, they, they say, you know, okay, we're just gonna give you a little break here. Mm-Hmm <affirmative> reader mode is still an edge and other Chrome based browser. So something you should know, Google's Chrome is based on an open source platform written by Googlers, but it's open source called chromium. And there are many, many other, this is Google's secret way of taking over the world. By the way, I am more and more interpreting every move by Google as a way to take over the world. Maybe I'm just getting cynical, but by releasing chromium open source, even though they wrote it, mm-hmm, <affirmative>, they're encouraging other companies to use it as the base for their browsers. Cuz eventually I think they wanna make a monoculture. Every browser uses chromium chromium. Wow. And at that point when, and cuz when they make changes, things like taking reader out, you know, they can kind of push it through the whole ecosystem. Totally

Mikah Sargent (00:45:42):
Make

Leo Laporte (00:45:42):
Sense. So right now third party browsers that use chromium, brave Vivaldi and Microsoft's edge browser seems to still have that reader mode. But I wonder, and of course again, and I, and I'll freely admit this I'm being cynical. Google makes its money in ads. Yeah. And reader mode takes out the ads. I like reader mode for that reason. I think that's why we like reader mode makes

Mikah Sargent (00:46:04):
It easier to read what you're actually there to read.

Leo Laporte (00:46:06):
<Laugh> yeah. So I'm not surprised Google's taking it out since they are almost 100% funded by their ad business. But I hope that other chromium browsers will keep it in

Mikah Sargent (00:46:19):
Or I guess they'll have to develop their own I

Leo Laporte (00:46:21):
Yeah. Safari, which is not based on chromium, which is based on web kit. Apple's safari does have a reader mode. In fact they aggressively push it, which is great. In fact, they'll even say when you go to a site, oh you can see this in reader mode. You wanna see in radio mode, cut. Try it and read your mode. You'll love it. So there's the answer to the question 45 minutes later, Lewis is on the line from Hollywood, California. Hi Lewis, Leo and MIkah. Your

Caller 2 (00:46:42):
President.

Leo Laporte (00:46:42):
Hello? Hello. Mr. Lewis,

Caller 2 (00:46:44):
Leo and MIkah greetings from Hollywood, California where the current temperature is 80 degrees and the is 632

Leo Laporte (00:46:51):
<Laugh> well wouldn't you rather have that than 104?

Caller 2 (00:46:55):
I suppo oh definitely. Yes. first Leo, I owe an enormous apology to miss Shafer. I, my humidity addled brain went back in time for a moment and I addressed Kim as Heather, Kim. Wow.

Leo Laporte (00:47:07):
I do that all the time.

Caller 2 (00:47:09):
Except my sincere apology. I know who you are. Blame it on humidity induced brain fever.

Leo Laporte (00:47:16):
All right, Kim forgives you. Right Kim?

Kim Schaffer (00:47:18):
I didn't even hear him say that. So that apology was completely

Leo Laporte (00:47:22):
Unnecessary. You busted yourself for no reason.

Kim Schaffer (00:47:23):
Maybe the humidity from this week got to my head too. Cause

Leo Laporte (00:47:27):
It was hot this week up hot, even up here in Northern California. It was miserable. So

Mikah Sargent (00:47:31):
Hot. Yeah. Oh

Caller 2 (00:47:32):
Leo and MIkah. I'm looking for a hardware recommendation. That'll work with both Mac and iPhone. And if Scott has any thoughts on this so much the better, I'd like a recommendation for wireless. H D I,

Leo Laporte (00:47:46):
My now I haven't tried it lately, but my experience with wireless H D I has been abysmal. Yeah.

Mikah Sargent (00:47:52):
That's that was that heavy side. I did.

Leo Laporte (00:47:54):
Scott, do you have any experience with wireless? H D M I

Mikah Sargent (00:47:58):
I'm. I'm afraid my experience is the same

Leo Laporte (00:48:00):
As yours. Yeah. Abysmal. Yeah. who is it that makes those, is it something that begins with a w that makes the wireless video and it's, and it's kind of you, if you look at it, <laugh> I know D V D O used to. Yeah. then the wire cutter has a review of the best, you know, and I ki do you trust wire cutter? I trust,

Mikah Sargent (00:48:24):
I, I definitely trust wire cutter do, but Lewis, I love it. If you could maybe tell us what you're trying to do as opposed to, so

Caller 2 (00:48:30):
You're, so while traveling, if you're in a hotel room where the television has an H D M I input, or you're at a friend's house, you don't wanna have to carry around a 20 foot long braided cable to connect your iPhone or your MacBook to the television. So I was looking for well,

Leo Laporte (00:48:48):
But remember, you now have to connect the base station for the wireless HTMI to the television.

Caller 2 (00:48:54):
Well, but then it's just, then some of them are really small. Some of them are okay. I have you know, double antenna. That's

Leo Laporte (00:49:03):
A, I mean, I like that more and more hotels. I have to say, I'm seeing more and more hotels where it just says log into your Netflix or, or, or, or cast to it. And I love that. I have to say I'm really enjoying

Mikah Sargent (00:49:14):
That. I was gonna say cast to it. Have you considered, instead of getting a wireless HGM, I instead getting an apple TV and using that, you can plug that into the TV. Can

Caller 2 (00:49:23):
You travel with a, with a, an apple TV connected to the hotel, or

Mikah Sargent (00:49:28):
In fact, they've they've recently updated TVs to be able to work perfectly with captive wifi login. Ah, nice. So it's no issue to be able to log in using an apple TV. And in that way, you're using airplay instead. And airplay my experience with that is not a business much better, better,

Caller 2 (00:49:46):
Totally agree. I've got apple TV. I, no problem that

Leo Laporte (00:49:49):
Those are small. It's like smaller than HTMI. So I'll tell you what the, the wire cutter says. They say sometimes it's not convenient to run. H D M I cables a wireless transmitter solves that problem, allowing you to blah, blah, blah. A good wired setup will always be more reliable. But if you need a wireless transmission, we recommend the nearest Aries home. Plus N Y R I U S a R that's I E S it's 250 bucks. Mm-Hmm <affirmative> it says it reliably sends 10 80 P that's another issue with it. You're not gonna get 4k which you would get an TV. Isn't gonna be 4k. Oh, I beg to differ. You're staying in some slow down hotels, I guess. Yeah. More and more hotels actually have decent TVs. You're right. For a long time, you get a 42 inch seven 20 P TV right in the hotel. But no, I'm more and more seeing 4k TVs in the hotels. Good. But this is 10 80 P 7.1 channel wireless audio. I, you know, if you wanna bring 7, 8, 9 speakers with me, go, <laugh> go, go, go through. It goes through walls, up to a hundred feet away, loaded with helpful fill features. 250 bucks is pricey. It's more than the less expensive runner up. More than an apple TV. Yeah. Good point.

Caller 2 (00:51:05):
Yeah. One more recommendation, very quickly. A software one. Do you have a recommendation for Mac for a application that will seek out and help you sort through duplicate images?

Mikah Sargent (00:51:18):
Oh, hands down. It's an app called Gemini. Gemini

Leo Laporte (00:51:22):
Gemini two.

Mikah Sargent (00:51:23):
It is. Yeah. It's Gemini too. That's right. Not

Leo Laporte (00:51:25):
Free, but really good.

Mikah Sargent (00:51:27):
Yeah. So if you looking

Leo Laporte (00:51:28):
Subscription, which is kind of annoying.

Mikah Sargent (00:51:31):
Yeah. MACPA makes a lot of great apps, but Gemini two, it will work with photos and also files. So you kinda get a two for one there, if you also wanna do that, but what's great about Gemini two, is that along with doing literal duplicates, it will also show you groupings of photos that are very similar. Maybe when you, you know, held down the shutter button to try to get capture something that looks good and can help you sort through those as well. But yes, anytime anyone asks me, how can I sort through my duplicates, Gemini too, is what I choose. But I will say that stay posted because when Ventura rolls out apple is actually improved the in duplicate detection for photos. Good in, in Ventura. So if you can hold out, you might try that first. Okay. And then go to Jim and I too, if you need some more help

Leo Laporte (00:52:16):
Out $20 a year for one Mac and then they have multiple Mac subscriptions. And because MACPA is in Ukraine, you might think of it as a charitable contribution in some ways, you know, to support the Ukraine people.

Caller 2 (00:52:31):
Thank

Leo Laporte (00:52:32):
You, gentlemen. Thank you. Always a pleasure, Louis. All right. You too. Yeah. Just what do you do with humidity? What do you, what, what can you do with humidity? Just throw a bucket of water over your head. Embrace it. I guess

Mikah Sargent (00:52:43):
It's you have to have a, have a dehumidifier, you

Leo Laporte (00:52:46):
Know, cuz you're from Missouri. Yeah. You've lived in that environment.

Mikah Sargent (00:52:49):
AC natural. Well by AC is a dehumidify process. So if you've got AC that's the way to help, but

Leo Laporte (00:52:56):
He will also dry the house out. Yes. Yeah, but maybe not, but if it's hot solution, <laugh> eighty eight eighty eight ask Leo is the phone number website tech guy labs.com will put a link to the Gemini two D der on the website. More calls right after this. Yeah, but don't leave your apple TV in the hotel. Yeah, don't leave it. Oh yeah. Yay. Yay. You would be sorry if you do that.

Scott Wilkinson (00:53:27):
Oh man.

Leo Laporte (00:53:27):
Especially at the Bates motel, cuz you know, Norman could be a little sticky.

Scott Wilkinson (00:53:33):
<Laugh> little sticky fingered

Leo Laporte (00:53:35):
About the whole thing. Yes,

Scott Wilkinson (00:53:37):
Yes, indeed.

Leo Laporte (00:53:39):
All your Scott Wall MIkah and I enjoy a fine beverage please too. Yes.

Scott Wilkinson (00:53:47):
Beverage

Leo Laporte (00:53:48):
<Laugh> well done. Bravo <laugh>

Scott Wilkinson (00:53:52):
Oh, thank you.

Leo Laporte (00:53:53):
Excellent. Homer Simpson.

Scott Wilkinson (00:53:55):
<Laugh> don't don't okay. Hello everybody. So nice to see you all here. As always finally the heat has broken. It is humid up here in Santa Cruz as well. But man, coastal town of Santa Cruz got to the mid nineties last week, which is very rare, very rare and up in the Hills easily into the 105 hundred and 10 range. And that's just a few miles away from here. Hey loquacious, always great to see you here.

Scott Wilkinson (00:54:33):
Let's see. Twisted, Mr. Says O LED's dim when there's a static image displayed for long periods of time it's to protect the panel generally. That's true. But this raising of the black level, I, I don't think there's a need to do that and there should be a way to turn it off. So I'm, I'm kind of bummed about that. Now I will tell you this. I have a first generation Sony O led a one E and I don't see any evidence of screen burn now. I don't leave a static image on it all for long periods of time. And I don't watch, I don't keep the news channels on it for days at a time with the scrolling ticker at the bottom. And I don't play video games on it, so there's no scoreboards sitting there in one place, but I have seen no evidence of screen burn on that.

Scott Wilkinson (00:55:27):
OLET in now some number of years. When, when did the O a one E come out user 79 98? How do you turn off the auto dimming on the OLET? Well, there may be a control in the picture menu to, to do that. Some will probably offer it some won't. Huh. Mike ma how you doing, man? How about putting a piece of black tape over that light sensor? Hey, you know what, that's a low tech, but great idea for the for the Sony, a 95 K QD led to prevent it from raising the black level in, in high ambient light situations. I like that. I like that simple, probably effective. I would certainly wanna try it.

Scott Wilkinson (00:56:29):
Let's see. Gumby recommendation on a good set of under $200 over the year, travel wireless, wired headphones, collapse, small like the beats I'm looking at the ATM M 50 at ath. Sorry. that's a good question. I think the Sony are more than that. Let me double check. They're the, I, I really like the Sony for, for traveling. That's what I use. It's the Sony w M X 1000. That's what it is. W H 1000 XM four. That's what it is. Oh yeah. They're 350 bucks. So that's more than you wanna spend, which is too bad, cuz they're really, really good. Let's see. What was the one you were looking at? You were looking at the, at H M 50. Let me look that up real quick. At H was it damn sorry about that folks. Let me just see here.

Scott Wilkinson (00:57:48):
What was it? You were looking at a T H M 50. Let me try to remember that. A T H dash M 50, who makes that one? I've forgotten audio Technica of course silly me. Yeah. Well audio Technica headphones are great. I have no problem with those at all. If they're wireless, if what you need is wireless then, then sure, absolutely. I really like the Sony, but they're too expensive. Oh, you know what you could, if you could get like the XM three, the third generation they might be priced more in the $200 range. Let's see. W H w H dash 1000 XM three.

Scott Wilkinson (00:58:53):
Yeah, there's, there's one on eBay for 114 bucks. There's one on eBay for 400 bucks. And there's another one on eBay for two hundred and nineteen two hundred twenty bucks. So that's actually what I have. I have the XM threes, which are now couple generations old, but man, they just sound great. They fold up nice noise. Cancellation is excellent. So I, I would consider finding a good used pair of those. Let's see here. Oh, user 86 80 says here's Sony's official method to turn off auto brightness. Oh, okay. I'll have to look at that. Looking for at criteria for large 4k TV, 65 inch plus this is Doug amp wall mounted that can best double as a Mac monitor on the wall. I guess, I guess an O led would, would be good at that. I, I don't have much experience using TVs as computer monitors. So I wouldn't really have a lot of good things to say about that. I mean, informative things. I know, I know people who do Mike man in the chat room uses one for a coloring monitor in his coloring work. But that's not exactly what you have in mind either how my main question would be, how good is the text? Is the text crisp and clean and you'd want a 4k for that? I'm I'm sure. And I would guess an O led would probably be a really good thing.

Scott Wilkinson (01:00:37):
Hees is what's the visual cues of the black level is raised well, black doesn't look black, it looks dark gray. And according to RTS, it also takes on a kind of a purplish hue. Beat masters is going back to the headphone question, send Heiser also a good, very good make. And you could probably find a, a good set in the $200 range there. Gumby says the fourth generation of the SOS are closer to $200 too. Sure. So if you can get the fourth generation then yeah, absolutely. I just love my SOS. I that's what I use on flights. And even when I'm watching TV at home on the headphones, when Joanna doesn't want to be disturbed that's what I use. Mike man says the LGO led works great as a computer monitor. Well, there you go. I would trust him, take his advice. You could get the 48 inch or if you wanted to get bigger, you'd get bigger. Absolutely. Six minutes past the hour. We're coming up. See Doug M says just trying to determine criteria for choosing one. Look at text, not much room on the desk with 32 inch monitor. So LGO let it is. Yay. If it's gonna be on the wall right behind your desk. I imagine a 48 would be fine.

Scott Wilkinson (01:02:30):
The four by four by four L E D cube behind me. Jason N H is called a hyper cube. It was a gift actually.

Leo Laporte (01:02:39):
Mr. Wilkinson. Thank you.

Scott Wilkinson (01:02:42):
My pleasure.

Leo Laporte (01:02:43):
See you next. Have a wonderful week.

Scott Wilkinson (01:02:44):
Thanks. You too.

Leo Laporte (01:02:46):
It's time to talk tech Leo Laport. My Sargent. Hello? we're both wearing black as is appropriate. Yes, because this was a week, right? In history mm-hmm <affirmative> but also cuz of the queen I'm talking about, but also we are also a little happy inside because apple we're a little happy inside, but we can't show it because we're journalists. Oh wait, I

Mikah Sargent (01:03:15):
Just showed it. Oh

Leo Laporte (01:03:16):
No jiggling. <Laugh> it's Monday. Ios 16 comes out. So get ready. All your phones. I did see one bank, ironically, a bank that serves the British royalty, very fancy personal bank in the UK. Tell its customers. Please do not upgrade to iOS 16. Oh on app will not work. Oh Lord. And here's how to stomp that. Now I have to say if you have to not upgrade your operating system because of a bank's

Mikah Sargent (01:03:46):
Get a new

Leo Laporte (01:03:47):
Bank. Yes please. Yes. That's terrible. Please.

Mikah Sargent (01:03:51):
Don't install the latest. Don't

Leo Laporte (01:03:54):
Want you to be secure. Just compatible. Okay. Okay. Fine. 88, 88 asks you I'm sure most apps will continue to work. I don't know what it would be in iOS 16 that might rate things. I

Mikah Sargent (01:04:09):
Don't, that, that sounds more like a, we don't want to deal with troubleshooting that could come up rather than

Leo Laporte (01:04:14):
Too much trouble. We're too busy. Managing all money. <Laugh> yeah. All right. I think we've covered the apple event in, in all the detail we needed to Google event is coming up October 9th. Yeah. Yeah. We know already, because Google already said what they're gonna do with it. The new pixel seven and I presume seven XL to replace their pixel six. Those pixels phones are nice. They don't sell very well they're they don't compete with a Samsung in the Android space very well. But I always think they're nice hardware. I like to have

Mikah Sargent (01:04:49):
It. I I'm rocking this pixel six that I've had since it's nice phone day one. Yeah. It's a, it's a

Leo Laporte (01:04:53):
Great phone and new pixel watch. Google's never done a watch. Yeah. So that'll be interesting. Google owns Fitbit. I, you know, they're so far behind apple, which is now in its eighth generation watch at Google's first generation watch. I don't know especially since Apple's doing this ultra sport watch, which really is out to compete with not just garment, not Fitbit, but Garin the high end. And I was Sur surprised. I was actually very pleased that apple, you know, Garmin's watches are more like a thousand dollars apple. It was speculated would cost the apple ultra would cost a thousand bucks only 800 only, only 800 hundred. Well, but for the size of

Mikah Sargent (01:05:35):
In comparison,

Leo Laporte (01:05:36):
It's a good deal. Yeah,

Mikah Sargent (01:05:37):
Yeah, yeah, exactly.

Leo Laporte (01:05:38):
I'm really, I don't know. I'm gonna, I, I order it cuz you know, we should, we should look at it. We oh, absolutely. I'm thinking it might be, even for me, just a little too big.

Mikah Sargent (01:05:47):
I don't know. Once you get it on your wrist, you,

Leo Laporte (01:05:49):
You felt comfortable, right? Yeah.

Mikah Sargent (01:05:51):
I mean, I, like I said, having it on my wrist, it certainly looked huge. I've got these tiny little wrists, so that's part of the problem, but it didn't feel big. Yeah. And so if you can get past the looks, the functionality that it provides is so much more,

Leo Laporte (01:06:04):
It is a style thing too. Yeah. I mean nowadays big watches, big watches

Mikah Sargent (01:06:07):
Are I think actually I think big watches have kind of always been in. Yeah,

Leo Laporte (01:06:11):
It was weird cuz it was for a while. It was the status symbol was the smallest possible phone and the biggest possible watch <laugh> that's changed a little bit over the years. Alright. Let's go back to the phones. Eighty eight eighty eight. Ask Leo Kathy's on the line from Los Angeles. Hello Kathy.

Caller 3 (01:06:29):
Hi. How are you? We're

Leo Laporte (01:06:30):
Great. How are you?

Caller 3 (01:06:32):
I am fine. I'm cooled off a little bit, but humidity was terrible. You cut it with the knife. It

Leo Laporte (01:06:38):
Was bad over the week, but now it's humid. So geez, you can't win. Can't

Caller 3 (01:06:44):
For losing. I know. But anyway, I have a question. I have looked and looked and researched and I couldn't find anything easy, easy keyword, easy. I need to take my text from my phone and print 'em out for court. And I can't find an easy way to do that because what

Leo Laporte (01:07:01):
Kind of phone do you have? What kind of phone do you have?

Caller 3 (01:07:04):
I have a Android.

Leo Laporte (01:07:07):
Answer's very specific to the phone. So on an Android phone, do you have a windows computer?

Caller 3 (01:07:15):
I, no.

Leo Laporte (01:07:17):
Do you have any

Caller 3 (01:07:18):
Computer or maybe my work one might be, I have a acre laptop.

Leo Laporte (01:07:22):
Oh, that's a windows computer at work. Yeah. You need, you need to hook it up to a computer to print these messages that a computer had a, obviously a printer. <Laugh> right.

Caller 3 (01:07:31):
I get my phone up to the computer. Yeah.

Leo Laporte (01:07:34):
So there are a number of apps that you can buy that will back up your text messages to your computer and then you can easily print them from your computer. They're in the Google play store. I don't have a lot of experience with any of them. So I don't know which one to recommend. I'm looking at some websites. In fact, I've got a website. Didn't

Caller 3 (01:07:55):
Look at 'em but I didn't. Yeah. I didn't know either. Which to choose from.

Leo Laporte (01:07:58):
Yeah. Transfer is one. Yeah. A lot of the backup programs will do this. Super backup will do it cuz they'll back up your messages as text and then you open the file where the messages are and you, you could print them out. Individually. Does court want you to have a date and time on them?

Caller 3 (01:08:17):
They have it said, but I have a, I think I have dates on 'em you know, like how you see the day you send them. Yeah. I don't know about time. Yeah. it's just a small claims court, but it's all I, no,

Leo Laporte (01:08:28):
Yeah. It's evidence. I understand. Right.

Caller 3 (01:08:30):
But I, I have right. But that's my evidence. Well,

Leo Laporte (01:08:32):
Yeah, judge, Judy's gonna need to see some evidence here. So you, you got

Caller 3 (01:08:35):
It. It's not documented if it's not documented. It never happened. <Laugh>

Leo Laporte (01:08:38):
Exactly. Exactly. So there are programs. That'll do it. A number of them I'll put, we'll just put a link in the show notes. I don't have any experience with any of these chatroom. Do you have any experience with these? The other thing you could do is somebody saying is you could email the texts to your Acer at work, you know, to your work address and print them there. That would, but

Caller 3 (01:09:00):
I have like 10, but I have tons of them like monthly

Leo Laporte (01:09:02):
Work worth and

Caller 3 (01:09:04):
Okay. That's why I said the keyword was easy. Like just I wanna take like yeah,

Leo Laporte (01:09:07):
Yeah. Cuz probably for court evidence. That's why I'm asking about the date and time, you know, that's on the message. I don't know if you did a screenshot on your phone that might be from an evidentiary point of view. And it really depends on the court and the judge and all that, but I, it might be better because what do I do

Caller 3 (01:09:23):
With the screen?

Leo Laporte (01:09:24):
Then you have to print the screenshot. You could print the screenshot. That's much easier. Yeah. But it's but if you have hundreds of messages opening each one and going CLA CLA is a pain in the behind. Yeah.

Caller 3 (01:09:36):
What it's like, it's like not hundreds, but I have to like separate, like what's what's relevant and what's not. Yeah. You know like, like July 3rd, I may have like a whole conversation and then I may have a little unrelevant one like July 5th. Yeah.

Leo Laporte (01:09:50):
Yeah. You probably screenshot sounds like a lot of work. I have used it. I would recommend it SMS backup plus.

Caller 3 (01:09:56):
Okay.

Leo Laporte (01:09:57):
Which backs up your SMS messages, which you can then transfer to Gmail for instance, what it, what it does is it and that's actually kind of cool. You back up the messages. You can also do your call history if that's relevant into your Gmail or your Google calendar. And then you could print it out from Gmail or your Google calendar, which I think is probably the E I mean, since you want ease, that's probably the easiest way to do it. And I have used that program.

Caller 3 (01:10:25):
I'm old, I'm old, you know, I'm not tech, you know, like me

Leo Laporte (01:10:28):
Too, I'm old too.

Caller 3 (01:10:29):
You know like, well, yeah, I know you're you're three years old than me, but <laugh> so

Leo Laporte (01:10:34):
If you're old, I'm really old,

Caller 3 (01:10:36):
You know that, that blue, that blue box and PowerPoints, I call, I have a name for that blue box. Her name's Betty, something blue. <Laugh> you know, I can't do that every time I get everything. Right. I click on it. It goes all Hayward. So

Leo Laporte (01:10:48):
<Laugh>, I am with you a hundred percent. I know how you feel. So try that it's in the Google play store. It's also free and open source. So yeah. And because it's free and open source, I can recommend it, you know, as being safe.

Caller 3 (01:11:01):
Yeah. SMS plus

Leo Laporte (01:11:03):
Backup plus SMS backup plus.

Caller 3 (01:11:06):
Okay.

Leo Laporte (01:11:07):
We've

Caller 3 (01:11:07):
Got a place where we can find, we need to call you for weeks. <Laugh>

Leo Laporte (01:11:10):
Good. And we'll yes. Where will we put that link? Mic sergeants. What'll that link@techguylabs.com. So if you head there after the show, you'll be able to find it. If you do lose it SMS, and guess what our advertisers are, are so generous on this radio show that we don't even have to charge you for a visit to that website. We don't make you sign up. We don't make you do anything. We, we might show you an ad. I don't know if there's an ad there, but

Caller 3 (01:11:32):
No, no. If what happens if I trying it and I can't get it to work, what I is there, do I go to the chat room and ask somebody something?

Leo Laporte (01:11:38):
Yeah. You could do that. Or you can call back. I think you'll be able to figure it out. I think it's pretty straightforward because it's designed to BA it says SMS. That's the text messages back up. Right. It's designed to do exactly what you want and then once it's backed up. Yeah. Yeah. I don't think it's gonna be hard for you to use, watch after the blue box though. Yeah. Betty blue

Caller 3 (01:11:57):
Box. Wait Betty. Yeah. You can figure out what the B word. Betty blank. Blue

Leo Laporte (01:12:01):
Box. <Laugh> okay. Can't I'm

Caller 3 (01:12:06):
Glad you like in two seconds. I'm glad

Leo Laporte (01:12:08):
You got in Kathy.

Caller 3 (01:12:09):
I, I am too. Thank you so much. You guys have a good day. I'd love

Leo Laporte (01:12:12):
You too. To you call back anytime she says she's old and she's younger than me. Oh, uhoh well do this is why MIkah's here to give us a little, it's like a coat of new paint. <Laugh> little, a little refresher. Eighty eight, eighty eight. Ask Leo. That's the phone number? You could dial 88, 88 ask Leo and Mica mm-hmm <affirmative> that works. It works. Tried. It it's a lot of numbers. So <laugh> just think MIkah's understood. It's it's it's it's it's implied more calls right after this. He's drinking that it isn't the most attractive jar. It is loud, but it's actually cloudy. It's a beverage. It's a beverage. It's a, it's a commercial beverage that he, that is in our snack cupboard. So the snack cupboard, I think it's okay. I'm just saying, I think it's okay. It passes. Yeah.

Leo Laporte (01:13:11):
But it does look a little like maybe he just took a drug test, but he didn't cuz we don't drug test MIkah cuz he's he's definitely much more straight here on there's a one employee that we than we drug test. There's one we drug test, but nobody he's not here. No, that's a joke. That's a joke. That's a joke. Nobody, nobody. Coat of new paint, MIkah Sargent too bad. The name spelled wrong. They always incorrectly it's with a K mic with a K not mic with a C cuz Mike with the C is MIkah. Mikah with the C is biblical biblical MIkah with a K is what unique. One of a kind. And it seems right. It does look like Mississippi. Tap water looks good. Oh that's sad. That is sad. Next time I'm not using a glass. I'm using a mug. So no one can judge my name. I know I used a belt, a ball jar for some reason. Are you gonna do some canning later? It was the only large enough jar to fit my silly experiment. I think that must be from Debbie she's she's the only one in the

Mikah Sargent (01:14:12):
Building. Who's that does canning or jar

Leo Laporte (01:14:14):
It crafty enough to be using ball jars looks like the moon shine and peach juice are left in the fridge.

Mikah Sargent (01:14:23):
Oh no. That's why it's got that. Mm

Leo Laporte (01:14:26):
There's Tany. Ooh. It's

Mikah Sargent (01:14:28):
Tany. Might it Tany? Mm. I dare say.

Leo Laporte (01:14:31):
Yeah. Mm-hmm <affirmative>

Mikah Sargent (01:14:34):
I do lack those Georgia peaches.

Leo Laporte (01:14:36):
Georgia peaches. Yeah. I seemed you should use an Ireland. Meer flask. You should use what's the big round bottom FLAS they use in breaking bad. Oh, it's very, very expensive. What

Mikah Sargent (01:14:47):
Are those

Leo Laporte (01:14:47):
Called? I don't know. You can't they're they're no good because you have to have a stand for 'em but you know, you know, you need em,

Mikah Sargent (01:14:54):
Round, bottom flasks also called round bottomed, flasks or a B flasks

Leo Laporte (01:15:01):
ABI

Mikah Sargent (01:15:01):
FLAS ABI flasks a B flask

Leo Laporte (01:15:04):
Concert was a very good, although Motley crew does attract a bit of a Rere crowd. So it was very feisty.

Mikah Sargent (01:15:15):
I was wondering if it got a little feisty in the

Leo Laporte (01:15:17):
Very feisty, the security people were very busy and we were at row six. So we were, we were like, you know, you

Mikah Sargent (01:15:25):
Were among the most committed.

Leo Laporte (01:15:27):
Yeah. But we're also in the place. Everybody in the entire stadium wants to be. Oh no. So everybody in the entire stadium tries to get in there and I, I, it's not. Yeah. That's why we're going to see Katie Perry in Vegas where they know how to police.

Mikah Sargent (01:15:44):
Yeah. That actually sounds, I'll

Leo Laporte (01:15:46):
Tell you another,

Mikah Sargent (01:15:47):
That sounds exhausting.

Leo Laporte (01:15:47):
You really don't wanna see Motley crew up close <laugh>

Mikah Sargent (01:15:50):
It's better from a,

Leo Laporte (01:15:52):
Their moly.

Mikah Sargent (01:15:52):
All right. To maintain the I'll

Leo Laporte (01:15:54):
Pollution. I'll I'll pull up some pictures. We were, we were so close. It was actually kind of wild.

Mikah Sargent (01:16:02):
You could smell their breath.

Leo Laporte (01:16:04):
You, you could, they were as close as I am to you. Wow. and what I like about that is you feel like it's actually a, a music performance. You're not so far, that's the band is there playing for you? And, and I realized that's worth, that's worth it because you know, you're really you're really there. Like here's Brett, Michael's laughing at my outfit.

Mikah Sargent (01:16:35):
<Laugh> how old is Brett Michaels? These days? He's

Leo Laporte (01:16:37):
60, roughly 60 he's about my age. Well, no, he's younger than me, but he, he, he was great. Poison was amazing.

Mikah Sargent (01:16:47):
Oh, as Brett Michaels, look at that of poison. Yeah.

Leo Laporte (01:16:50):
And then he's saying hi to everybody and the whole band came out at the end and thanked people. Oh, that's cool. You know, it, that was amazing. Feel

Mikah Sargent (01:16:59):
Like connection is

Leo Laporte (01:16:59):
Cool. Yeah. Our show today brought to you by the great folks@stamps.com. You know, I'm a stamps.com lover. We've been using stamps.com since I think the turn of the century, I can't remember for forever as any business should, because I don't want our, you know, our staff having to go down to the post office to buy postage. That's crazy. And I certainly don't want to get a postage meter. That's even nuts. Nuts here. Is that a word nuttier stamps.com does everything you can do at the post office without leaving your desk, your computer, your printer, no special link, no postage meter. It is the way to do your postage. And especially as we approach the holiday season, when those lines get longer, the parking slash lots get filled up. It's it's, it's a real time sync to go to the post office.

Leo Laporte (01:17:53):
Now I love the post office, but, and, and poster carriers. As you heard, we had a C caller from a postal carrier was on his route call unless a couple of hours ago love our post office, but so does stamps.com and now stamps.com is even better. It's a 24 7 post office. You can access from everywhere. And now not only us postal service ups, United parcel service too. So it is really the one stop for all of your mailing needs, stamps dot. Wherever you do business, all you need is a computer or printer it'll print right on the envelope, your logo, the return address it, take the mailing address from your software. So if you're an eBay or Etsy seller, an Amazon seller, it'll automatically take the address, fill that in. If you need to fill out any forms, customs forms or priority mail forms, it'll print those out for you automatically. So it saves you so much time. It'll even tell you. And I love this with their switch and save features. Stamps.Com, lets you compare carriers and rates. So you'll always get the best deal every time. So wonderful. If you're doing an online store, stamps.com will work seamlessly with all the major shopping carts and marketplaces. If it, when it's time to come, you know, get the mail, you don't have to go to the post office or even the post, the mailbox outside they'll come and get.

Leo Laporte (01:19:41):
You they've even got a SW you know, a little switch on your dashboard that says, come and get it. It's already to go. And it looks professional. This is another thing that we don't talk about enough, but if you're shipping that stamps.com and SIA there and your logo, it just makes you look like a big business. Even if you're not. I love it. I think you'll love it too. Stamps.Com. Click the microphone, enter TWI and say goodbye to all your Mailin woes stamps.com, eighty eight eighty eight. Ask Leo the phone number. Leo LaPorte, Mike, a Sargent taking your calls. It's it's really great to have you here by the way, Mike, I miss you when you're not here. It's. It's just nice to have a younger person.

Mikah Sargent (01:21:05):
Well, I enjoy being here.

Leo Laporte (01:21:07):
Yeah. As well, you know, and you know, a lot of stuff and that's, it's a great help. Myron on the line from Minneapolis, the twin cities. Hello, Myron.

Caller 4 (01:21:16):
Hey Leo. Both of you. I've got a question. I always thought that wired was supposed to be faster than wifi.

Leo Laporte (01:21:28):
Yes, it

Caller 4 (01:21:29):
Is. I've got Comcast and I've got a Nighthawk I'm paying for 400 and on, on my wifi, I'm getting like 365 to three 90 consistent.

Leo Laporte (01:21:44):
Wow. That's great.

Caller 4 (01:21:46):
But on my desktop it's, I'm getting 80.

Leo Laporte (01:21:53):
Oh, that's not good. And that's plugged into the Nighthawk correctly. Yeah. With an ethernet ethernet cable. Yep. So

Caller 4 (01:22:02):
Yeah. Yeah.

Mikah Sargent (01:22:03):
That's. That was gonna be my first

Leo Laporte (01:22:04):
Question's a fast cable. It may be a bad cable. Be a bad, it's easy to get bad cables. How old's the

Mikah Sargent (01:22:10):
Lap? The computer as well.

Caller 4 (01:22:12):
Well, it's, it's it's probably about four, four years. It's a, it's an apple

Leo Laporte (01:22:20):
That's, that's FA it's an apple. So there's something wrong, obviously. <Affirmative> that should be, if you're getting four or three 80 on wifi, I think that means you're getting from your provider more like 700, six or 700, cuz wifi is always, you know, 60% of the total possible bandwidth. So I think you're getting even more than you're paying for. So it's ridiculous that you're seeing only 80 same, same speed test tool in both cases.

Caller 4 (01:22:49):
Yes, yes.

Mikah Sargent (01:22:50):
Using a VPN or anything like that.

Caller 4 (01:22:55):
I do have a VPN, but I, I do it without,

Leo Laporte (01:22:58):
Yeah. Turn off any, any of that stuff. It is possible in the Nighthawk, which is a very nice router that you have QoS quality of service turned on, could be, and it is for some reason prioritizing wifi over hardwired. So I would look at the settings in the Nighthawk, in fact, probably. Okay. In this case to go back to the default settings, the Nighthawk has a, you know, at the, in the, I think the last page, the advanced page, it says, you know, reset to factory settings. I think it might be worth trying that you, you have multiple ethernet cable ports on the Nighthawk. You, I presume tried all of them. Yeah,

Caller 4 (01:23:38):
Yes. Yeah.

Mikah Sargent (01:23:40):
I would, if you didn't definitely try a different cable just to be sure

Leo Laporte (01:23:45):
Is and it's a four year old Mac

Caller 4 (01:23:49):
It's the next mini it's. It's not the M one or anything like that. Yeah,

Leo Laporte (01:23:53):
I'm wondering.

Mikah Sargent (01:23:55):
Yeah, because the, the apple TV, not the newest one, but the, it wasn't too long ago that the apple TV, the wifi was faster than the ethernet cuz they were still using.

Leo Laporte (01:24:03):
I'm wondering if they're using 10 megabit ethernet or something like that,

Mikah Sargent (01:24:07):
But that seems

Leo Laporte (01:24:08):
Well, that's the thing to check.

Caller 4 (01:24:09):
I get up. I get close to 200 on the apple TV.

Leo Laporte (01:24:13):
Yeah. Yeah.

Mikah Sargent (01:24:14):
Sorry. Yeah. I was just making a comparison.

Leo Laporte (01:24:15):
No, I think that, I think it's the mini we're pretty sure it's the mini is the problem. Yeah.

Mikah Sargent (01:24:20):
Right.

Leo Laporte (01:24:22):
Turn off wifi on the mini. I wonder if you have a very slow ethernet port on that you might look on the specs on that mini something is go, yeah, something's wrong. Either go back to the default settings on the net Nighthawk or turn off, if you have a Q I know you have a QS setting. If you have Q OS, the Nighthawk has a very elaborate Q OS page. You might want to disable QS. See if that fixes it. There's, you know, there's definitely something wrong.

Mikah Sargent (01:24:49):
So this is a 2018 Mac mini that

Leo Laporte (01:24:52):
No, that should have at least a hundred megabit if not

Mikah Sargent (01:24:55):
Connect and it's yeah. Ten one hundred 1000 base tea. Yeah. So it's gigabit. Okay. End base tea at one gig. Yeah. So

Leo Laporte (01:25:02):
Maybe the Nighthawk port is, is, is a 10 megabit port. Make sure the Nighthawk is care capable. You want gigabit everywhere. Gigabit ports, gigabit cable, six cat six is gigabit. Yep. Might just be a bad cable, something something's wrong. And I'm not sure what it is. Yeah.

Mikah Sargent (01:25:19):
The problem is there are so many different things that it could possibly be, but

Leo Laporte (01:25:22):
You're right in your basic assessment that, you know, I should be getting faster.

Mikah Sargent (01:25:25):
I would definitely launch your system preferences and go into the network tab and just make sure in that network tab on the left, there are lots of different options, including your wifi, including your ethernet. But if you've ever installed a network filter of any kind making sure that that is disabled by choosing the more option in setting the service to inactive that will include a link in the show notes as well@techilab.com for a little bit more information about that, but it, there may be some strange filtering going on. That's that's causing this. If it's not just

Leo Laporte (01:26:01):
The, there is also, we'll put a Mike B has found a apple support page that in the system report, you wanna make sure that, that the ethernet is set to 1000 based T right. And it will tell you actually on your connection if you're a thousand based T so I think that might be, we'll put a link here. This is a bit of a, you know, elaborate <laugh> discussion. But that's interesting. In other words, you can see, you know, how, when you go into the apple menu and the, about this Mac, there's a system report. You can, if you go into the network area, you can see what that Mac thinks it's connected to. And it will, that will at least tell you if it's a slow port on the Nighthawk, if it's a bad cable or, or something, you know, something else is wrong.

Leo Laporte (01:26:57):
So at least that will say the Mac will say, oh yeah, this is a thousand gigabit or a thousand megabit connection, which is a gigabit. If it's less than a gigabit connection, a thousand, if it's a hundred megabit, that's too slow and that's, that would actually make sense that you'd get 80. Yeah. So I'm thinking of something around there. The cable shouldn't be too long. Not more than 10 feet, certainly. Although I've used longer cables and hadn't been able to get full speed. So those are a few things that at least look at, it's hard for us to diagnose, cuz there's so many things that can go wrong in a case like that. But there's some few things to try, you know, look at the QS settings in the Nighthawk or get it back to the factory condition. I would, first thing I would do is go in that mini, get the system report and look at the network and see what speed it thinks that ethernet cable is also make sure of course in your network settings, that ethernet is the top. You get a, you have a stack of possible connections, always when you've got ethernet, always put that at the top. Okay. So I think those are a few, you know what the maximum link speed. I'd be curious. I hope some of that helps.

Caller 4 (01:28:05):
Yeah. Well I hope so too. I I really appreciate you guys. I, I listen all the time. I've been listening to you.

Leo Laporte (01:28:11):
Thank you. Nice Myron, but that's great. I'm

Caller 4 (01:28:14):
I'm delivering mail right now. So I didn't.

Leo Laporte (01:28:16):
Oh, we appreciate it. I love my postal carrier. Thank you for the work you do. I hope you get one of those nice new vehicles soon. <Laugh> yeah. Leo Laport, the tech guy, Johnny jet coming up. Yeah. Turn off wifi. All right. Gonna show more pictures.

Leo Laporte (01:28:38):
This is CE Deville. So, so the, the show started at four 30. So Joan jet and and poison were in the daylight and then the sun actually, it was cool. The sun started to set as crew was playing. So we got some really nice golden hour. Oh, neat pictures. But there's CC Deville. There's Brett. I actually, I was never a fan of any of these bands except maybe John jet. But I became a fan of poison. I was very impressed with Brett Michael's energy. His his, you know, the band was just super cool.

Mikah Sargent (01:29:15):
Is CE Deville part of poison as well. Yeah. Got it.

Leo Laporte (01:29:18):
Yeah. He's their their guitarist. He's actually really a cool dude.

Mikah Sargent (01:29:23):
Doesn't wear much sunscreen.

Leo Laporte (01:29:25):
Yeah. You could tell he is a little dark. This is the second and last date of the tour. That's

Mikah Sargent (01:29:32):
A cool guitar.

Leo Laporte (01:29:33):
Oh, I know. Look at that. I, at that, every rose I'm sorry. And then they came out right to the edge, which is very cool.

Mikah Sargent (01:29:45):
Oh, I like that jumping shot. You got there. That's kind of

Leo Laporte (01:29:47):
Neat. Oh, I didn't even notice that he's off the ground. I think he just floats that way. <Laugh>

Mikah Sargent (01:29:53):
The energy of the crowd.

Leo Laporte (01:29:56):
Now this is crew. They had a little bit more elaborated set.

Mikah Sargent (01:30:01):
<Laugh> are they like, were they the big one?

Leo Laporte (01:30:03):
No, Def Lepard was

Mikah Sargent (01:30:04):
The oh, Def

Leo Laporte (01:30:05):
Lepard but they had dancing girls. It was actually joint. See the dancing girl in the back. There was a joint headliners. So they alternate

Mikah Sargent (01:30:13):
Who's that on the drum there? Not the person playing, but the

Leo Laporte (01:30:15):
Person. Oh, that's the Taylor Hawkins. It's a tribute to the Fu fighters drummer.

Mikah Sargent (01:30:20):
Oh, got it.

Leo Laporte (01:30:21):
But it's obviously Tommy Lee that, yeah. So this is Vince Neil <laugh>.

Mikah Sargent (01:30:26):
Oh, wait. I thought that was still Michael.

Leo Laporte (01:30:29):
Not George looking great.

Mikah Sargent (01:30:31):
Oh, now I can see that's definitely a different guy.

Leo Laporte (01:30:34):
<Laugh>

Mikah Sargent (01:30:35):
That is a deep V not

Leo Laporte (01:30:37):
Looking. He was. Yeah.

Mikah Sargent (01:30:42):
And who is he? Part of

Leo Laporte (01:30:44):
This is crew.

Mikah Sargent (01:30:45):
Okay. So that's still Motley crew. Okay. Yeah.

Leo Laporte (01:30:48):
They were just little, you know what? These guys have lived a hard life there. I am giving them the devil horns. Actually. I don't think that's me, but yeah, I haven't, I haven't gone through these that's Nikki's six in the background. He's got kickstart written on his base because he, he was dead for a couple minutes and then they gave him a double adrenaline shot and kickstarted his art. So holy moly. He wrote a song about it. And are you a Motley crew fan Johnny? No, <laugh>

Johnny Jet (01:31:23):
No. I mean

Leo Laporte (01:31:24):
These guys, I

Johnny Jet (01:31:25):
Mean, I think I'm like one of their

Leo Laporte (01:31:26):
Songs. I like some of their songs, you know, this is none of these bands were my, my band.

Johnny Jet (01:31:32):
I love Def Leppard. I love my sister Lepp.

Leo Laporte (01:31:33):
Joan Leppard was very good. Joan jet was amazing. I didn't get any pictures of her. Lisa. I got a lot of

Mikah Sargent (01:31:39):
She's the only one whose songs I've actually heard

Leo Laporte (01:31:41):
Before. Yeah. Yeah. Me too. I don't know anyone I was after, after the show, the only song I was singing was hers.

Johnny Jet (01:31:45):
You don't know death. Lepard

Mikah Sargent (01:31:47):
Michael? No. I recognize the names of all of the other band. He's too young,

Leo Laporte (01:31:50):
But none of the, we gotta definitely Lepp is your age group.

Johnny Jet (01:31:53):
I definitely, but you've gotta know their songs. Pour some sugar on

Mikah Sargent (01:31:56):
Me. Oh, that's them. Okay. Awesome.

Leo Laporte (01:31:59):
Sure.

Johnny Jet (01:32:01):
You definitely know them.

Leo Laporte (01:32:02):
I know that.

Mikah Sargent (01:32:02):
That's the only sign. Yeah, I know that. So

Leo Laporte (01:32:03):
He's got a knife knife strapped to his boot. Not sure what he's expecting. Wait for what? Yeah. I don't know. Actually

Johnny Jet (01:32:08):
Can be fair. It's San Francisco.

Mikah Sargent (01:32:09):
There have been a lot of times lately where performers on stage have been hit by things and yeah. Well jumped up. So,

Leo Laporte (01:32:15):
So the sun starts to go down. You see, it gets dark all of a sudden.

Mikah Sargent (01:32:18):
Oh, so you gotta switch into warmer clothes.

Leo Laporte (01:32:19):
They, they change their clothes. Although the jeans are still pretty rundown.

Mikah Sargent (01:32:25):
Now can they sing well

Leo Laporte (01:32:27):
Still or no? Well, Vince actually sounded like Vince. Believe it or not.

Mikah Sargent (01:32:31):
What is that thing on? What is that spinning?

Leo Laporte (01:32:33):
That's his Mike stand he's. Oh,

Mikah Sargent (01:32:35):
He's got

Leo Laporte (01:32:35):
It out. He's wielding his be jeweled. Mike stand. Got it. That's another weapon. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Stay away from that. <Laugh> ah, he's been everywhere, man. This guy is a traveling dude. Johnny jet from Johnny jet.com. Mr. Jet, how are you, sir?

Johnny Jet (01:32:56):
I'm doing well. Thank you. Good. Jealous. Jealous of your pictures.

Leo Laporte (01:33:00):
Oh, I was just showing in the break. I was just showing some pictures from the <laugh>

Mikah Sargent (01:33:05):
The,

Leo Laporte (01:33:06):
The concert, by the way, you might say Leo, you're a little too old to go see Joan jet poison, Motley crew and Def Leppard. Oh no. I was exactly the age of everybody else. <Laugh> I,

Johnny Jet (01:33:17):
I was, you might be one of the younger people.

Leo Laporte (01:33:18):
That's the weirdest thing about seeing rock concerts these days. It's not people MIkah's age.

Mikah Sargent (01:33:23):
Yeah. I, I went to an alt Jay concert recently and well, it's been a little what a little while now. And I didn't realize that they were as much rock as they are until I looked around and saw that everybody there was so much older than I was who they're called alt Jay.

Leo Laporte (01:33:38):
No idea. I've never heard of the man. Never heard of them.

Mikah Sargent (01:33:41):
They're they're newer. But I didn't realize that they were liked by

Leo Laporte (01:33:45):
Rock and roll is essentially music for old folks. People Johnny's age and older. Right? Johnny? I

Johnny Jet (01:33:49):
Like it. That it was outdoors

Leo Laporte (01:33:51):
Too. It was outdoors and it was nice. There was no one. And I mean, no one wearing a mask. I had one on when I went in and I felt so silly. Oh,

Mikah Sargent (01:33:59):
See you can't let the,

Leo Laporte (01:34:00):
Take it off a peer pressure. I took it off.

Mikah Sargent (01:34:02):
Can't let that happen.

Leo Laporte (01:34:03):
No, I wanted to be rock and roll.

Mikah Sargent (01:34:05):
I people, yeah. People very close to me. So

Leo Laporte (01:34:08):
I've been testing ever since the concert, by the way. So Johnny what's

Johnny Jet (01:34:12):
You had COVID three weeks ago. I just read, I did that. I think I I've just read that the government says it, you know, don't even get the new shot if you've had COVID in the last three months

Leo Laporte (01:34:21):
Works

Mikah Sargent (01:34:22):
The same. Same. Is that what they're saying?

Leo Laporte (01:34:23):
Really?

Johnny Jet (01:34:24):
Yeah. Well I listen or is it dangerous? I'm not a doctor. Don't take my advice.

Leo Laporte (01:34:27):
Yeah. Oh wait. I'll

Johnny Jet (01:34:29):
They, they, what I read has said that you're protected,

Leo Laporte (01:34:31):
But anyway, yeah. I'll ask my doctor and I'll he'll he'll tell me what I have to do, but yeah, I did. I only, I got it a month ago, so

Johnny Jet (01:34:38):
I just scheduled my new booster for

Leo Laporte (01:34:40):
Monday. Good. So did Lisa and she added a month ago. So I don't know. I don't know. She did

Johnny Jet (01:34:45):
Not.

Leo Laporte (01:34:45):
She did not fare as well as I did. She had some long COVID stuff. She says she's still foggy. And her taste is still gone. So that's not, that's

Mikah Sargent (01:34:55):
My worst nightmare. A

Leo Laporte (01:34:56):
Person who has never gotten it. He's a unicorn, but let's again, let's talk, travel. That's what we're here for.

Johnny Jet (01:35:03):
Well, the big news this week is obviously the queen died. Prices to London are going up. I bet time. You can imagine. I

Leo Laporte (01:35:10):
Bet you literally, millions of people will go to London for her funeral, which is about definitely

Johnny Jet (01:35:14):
One of my friends in Alaska said his daughter's going. Here's

Leo Laporte (01:35:18):
Why I like the monarchy. Okay. Not that anybody asked <laugh> it's nice to have a leader. Like the Pope. I'm not Catholic either who doesn't have a political agenda. Well, I guess they kind of do, but the, the king of England or the queen of England, they're not allowed to have a political opinion. So they're just there to make you, you know, oh, look, there's. I do like that aspect. There's nice clothes. You know, they wear nice outfits. Yeah. That's what they're there for. They're kind of funny is these sort of, and, and to reassure you in difficult times, they're like little they're like dolls, like having a dolls and a dollhouse. Yeah. Only there. But what

Johnny Jet (01:35:49):
What's interesting is that the bank notes are about the change.

Leo Laporte (01:35:52):
Everything the bank knows,

Johnny Jet (01:35:54):
And it's gonna be the kid mailboxes.

Leo Laporte (01:35:55):
Everything says E two R everywhere you go, that's all gotta change.

Johnny Jet (01:36:00):
It's.

Leo Laporte (01:36:00):
So don't go to London. Is

Johnny Jet (01:36:02):
That what you're saying? God saved the king. God

Leo Laporte (01:36:03):
Saved the king that we're gonna have to,

Johnny Jet (01:36:05):
By the way I met the, I ever tell you the time I met the king.

Leo Laporte (01:36:08):
No,

Johnny Jet (01:36:09):
I, well, he was a prince, but I was at a, I was having dinner with the PR the GM of the big Marriott hotel, the Groner house in London. And he is like, oh, I gotta text. He's like, oh man, the prince Charles is coming for a big event and I gotta go greet him. I was like, can I go with you? He's like, let me ask the security detail. He's like they said, yes, you just have to stand behind me and don't don't do anything. And

Leo Laporte (01:36:29):
I was excited about seeing Motley crew <laugh> wow. That's pretty intense. Cook

Johnny Jet (01:36:33):
Was freezing outside. I waited for 20 minutes, had a Blackberry. It was over a decade ago. And he comes out and he greets him. And then all of a sudden, he just walks right by me. And he was looking at me. I just stuck my hand out and I go, Hey, prince Charles. And he just looked at me. It was really awkward. And I was like, man, I just committed a big faux pop.

Leo Laporte (01:36:50):
You sure did. You're not supposed to speak until spoken to. I know you're not supposed to try to shake their hand. Shocking.

Johnny Jet (01:36:56):
All the paparazzi was taking pictures, but anyway, he then came in, he shook my hand. He sat and talked to me for like, who?

Leo Laporte (01:37:02):
You know Charlie?

Johnny Jet (01:37:03):
Yeah. For like 20 seconds, the guy was hilarious. I said something that must have made him laugh because the paparazzi later said, what did you say that made him laugh? What did you say? I don't even remember. But he was actually that 20 seconds. He was, I felt he, I felt that he was very funny and, and charming.

Leo Laporte (01:37:21):
I think that that's pretty impressive. I'm I am impressed. I've talked to the man who danced with a girl who danced with the prince of Wales. That's very good, Johnny. Congratulations.

Johnny Jet (01:37:32):
So that was my travel. I also took, I'll just take a,

Leo Laporte (01:37:35):
All we've learned so far is don't go to London right now. All right.

Johnny Jet (01:37:39):
Put in. I put in the chat room, I just wrote a post on Google. Just came out this week with the best times to book flights.

Leo Laporte (01:37:46):
Oh, I like that.

Johnny Jet (01:37:47):
They analyzed five years of their Google flights.

Leo Laporte (01:37:50):
This is an eternal question. I've asked you many times. Should I book it six months ahead? Two months, one month. The day before. Exactly. What's the best time.

Johnny Jet (01:37:57):
So, so according to Google. Yeah. You know, there's some things that you already know. So, you know, they say obviously the best time to fly is midweek two days and Wednesdays.

Leo Laporte (01:38:07):
You'll see. You could tell that when you book, you know, you try to book on a

Johnny Jet (01:38:10):
Saturday. Yes. You didn't need them. Also. They'll say, you know, nonstop is much more expensive than making, taking a layover. So always consider that. But you know, if it's only a few dollars cheaper, I would not book a

Leo Laporte (01:38:21):
And, and open sandwich. Flights are not good. I mean, open or a connecting flight, open, open mouths, open. What do they call them?

Johnny Jet (01:38:27):
You mean a open jaw, open

Leo Laporte (01:38:30):
Jaw. Thank you.

Johnny Jet (01:38:31):
That's one. You fly let's. Those are more expensive LA to London and then go Paris to,

Leo Laporte (01:38:35):
To LA or, yeah, don't do that either. Yeah.

Johnny Jet (01:38:37):
Those are more usually actually it depends now because a lot of one way tickets are not more expensive than round trips. Oh, okay. But you have to dig down to this data. So they have it for when's the best time, the book of spring break ticket. Oh, Thanksgiving or Christmas. So for Christmas they say, you know, 36 to 74 days before departure is usually the time in the 52 days out is the lowest point also. Well

Leo Laporte (01:39:00):
That's okay. That's but that's specifically for the, the holidays.

Johnny Jet (01:39:05):
Yes. For Christmas.

Leo Laporte (01:39:06):
And that's interesting. Okay. So

Johnny Jet (01:39:08):
It all depends on where you're going. So spring break, they say the lowest. If you're departing in March or April, usually 23 to 59 days before departure and 30 days out is a low point. And for summer vacation, you know, you don't wanna book too early ever unless you're using miles and points or you really have to be on this certain flight in a set day. But

Leo Laporte (01:39:28):
If the, if the price goes down, can't you get it like a, a, a refund you

Johnny Jet (01:39:31):
Can now thanks to as long as you're not buying the most basic ticket. So always read the fair rule. So that's why I say avoid buying these basic economy tickets. I had a reader this week, email me say, Hey, I took your advice. I set a fair alert. And the price dropped. I called up United. And the agent said, you know what? I can't get the full discount. I said, why don't you just cancel your flight and rebook it? He goes, oh, I didn't think of that. And so he did that. So that's the way to do it. Okay. But make sure that you can get that flight before. Actually you should probably book the, actually, I don't think you can book the ticket first. So you have to cancel the other one, but just put it on hold. And so,

Leo Laporte (01:40:04):
But in general, just a very rough rule of thumb. You wanna buy at least a month ahead of time. It sounds like it

Johnny Jet (01:40:11):
All depends there. Sometimes if you're using miles and points, I look, I look just a few hours before sometimes.

Leo Laporte (01:40:16):
Oh. Because sometimes they, they have, they open it up that are empty and they'll say, well, we might as well get something.

Johnny Jet (01:40:22):
Yeah. It, it all depends. You know, last week that's

Leo Laporte (01:40:24):
Taken a chance because they may

Johnny Jet (01:40:26):
Not definitely taken a chance and you're not gonna most likely you're not gonna get a great seat unless you stick around the gate. And you know, if they upgrade, there are freaking flyers are usually holding the best seats, like the exit row or the bulkhead you can say, Hey, can you put me in there? There's all kinds of tricks, but it takes time. So I'll put this in my newsletter. I'll send it to you guys. You can put it in your show notes, but there's a lot of good data in there. So always set a farer is my number one tip for finding great deals.

Leo Laporte (01:40:53):
Also, actually the number one tip is being flexible. Number two is setting the fair alert. Do you have a, that way? Can tell a statue of the queen behind you? I do. I thought you did. That's interesting. Oh, that's funny. Where'd you get that? I got it at a party. I've gone. I've fortunate. I've gone to England many times. Nice. And I think this was from Virgin Atlantic. That's one of their parties. Yeah. The little bag. Yeah. I, you know, it, it, I, I, I was a little saddened by it. She's roughly my mother's age. So I kind of feel for charge too. Yeah. I can't understand. That's hard. That's really hard. Johnny jet, Johnny jet.com and don't forget his newsletters and Instagram and Twitter feeds too. Thank you, John. Hey, thank you. Thank you, Johnny jet.

Leo Laporte (01:41:43):
I forgot I had it on there. Up there. Johnny jet and the black hearts. My favorite band of the concert, I guess you'd have to like Joan jet. Wouldn't you definitely <laugh> Joan jet sister. I mean, I liked her before I found out we were related. <Laugh> we're not related. Just cause she's listening. You don't know this mic, but he used to be Johnny jet ski. What? Because he's Polish. Yeah. Is my nickname. No, because he likes to ride jet skis. Was this before you started traveling or while you were still there? Yes. Okay. Growing up on long islands now I used to jet ski. I had a jet ski said Johnny jet ski on the back. Oh, I used, did you have a standup? Yeah, of course. It was an old school. Yeah. That's what Lisa loves. She used to do crazy stunts on her jet ski.

Leo Laporte (01:42:31):
Like they'd wake, they'd surf, the wake of a boat and flip over the boat. Well, I wouldn't flip over a boat. That's insane. Well, that's wife. I would, I would jump the wave and yeah, she would always wave up. She got in, she's get in trouble all the time. <Laugh> and even submergent. She could even submerge it. She'd get in trouble all the time. The cops would come, you know, the boat cops would come and coast guard or whatever, and it's, they they'd make her sit in the water in the cold water while they lectured her. She has some next time we get together. I'll get her to tell you some stories. I, I would love to hear it, but yeah. So when I started traveling, I had to come up with a good name and I was like, you know what? I'm not Polish.

Leo Laporte (01:43:08):
I'll just, and but did you, I, so were you a competitive jet skier? No I wasn't on, on the tour or anything like that? No, I wasn't on just for you. I just, I just love to do it cause I know you love Def leopard. Let's hear it. I'll give you some, I won't play it. Well, actually, Lisa, I think, can you play it? I think I might have some audio. Let me look and see here's here's we had such good seats. I mean, they were, they were right there and they sounded great by the way they, my, my favorite song's hysteria by them. They did hysteria. They, they, and their voices are still great. They're mu they're fantastic. This is the guy Lisa always had a crush on the bass player. I think he's, I think he's making eyes at her right there.

Mikah Sargent (01:43:54):
<Laugh>

Johnny Jet (01:43:56):
I mean, these guys,

Leo Laporte (01:43:57):
I was this close. I mean, this was really

Mikah Sargent (01:43:59):
Right there. Yeah.

Leo Laporte (01:44:01):
Yeah, it was, they were good. I didn't really, I only know ports and sugar on me. I didn't know any other songs. I kind of read that's. How

Johnny Jet (01:44:08):
Long was the whole concert?

Leo Laporte (01:44:10):
Six hours, four hours, six hours. God, we were there and Lisa dance the whole, well, you can go to the bathroom from the amp bathrooms. So park, there was a chair, but mostly we're standing. Lisa had 27,000 steps because she basically PO my goodness the whole freaking time that's she was really happy. Well, there's the drummer, by the way, at the end there, the one arm drummer, he

Johnny Jet (01:44:33):
Was amazing one arm, right? Yeah. He was

Leo Laporte (01:44:35):
Amazing. I love this band because when he got in an auto wreck and lost his arm, they stopped recording for four years. They said, no, no, we're not gonna record anything without a drummer. That's awesome. And they re read all their songs so that he could do 'em and he's a really good drummer. So that was kind of cool. He's barefoot, by the way. He's a barefoot drummer,

Mikah Sargent (01:44:52):
Like the barefoot canes.

Leo Laporte (01:44:54):
Yeah.

Johnny Jet (01:44:54):
I, I, I got a quick question for you. Yes, sir. So next week, cranky flyer is having this big party in and Alberta burger that I go to.

Leo Laporte (01:45:01):
Oh yeah. Right at the airport.

Johnny Jet (01:45:03):
Yeah. So should I, should I call from the phone phone? So zoom in on my phone? Yes. Okay. I was like, otherwise, cuz usually I rush home and only if you

Leo Laporte (01:45:11):
Want to don't rush home. No,

Johnny Jet (01:45:12):
No, I won't rush home. I'll do it from the park. That

Leo Laporte (01:45:14):
Would be so awesome. Yeah. That'd be fine. Okay

Johnny Jet (01:45:16):
Please. So we might need to test it right before I just make sure there's strong enough signal there.

Leo Laporte (01:45:20):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Johnny Jet (01:45:20):
There's gonna be four.

Leo Laporte (01:45:22):
Don't

Johnny Jet (01:45:22):
Worry about it. Aviation geeks. There. It's

Leo Laporte (01:45:24):
A great story. I love it. Cuz apparently the in and out at lax has the best view of planes taken off. Ah, so they have a party there, everything

Johnny Jet (01:45:30):
In LA or even in America, it has the best. So yeah. And it's open to the public. I think one can go

Leo Laporte (01:45:37):
It's so definitely next week. Let's definitely do that. Okay. And if you can't just record something and we'll play it back. Well, no, seriously just recorded some video

Johnny Jet (01:45:46):
From the party. Oh.

Leo Laporte (01:45:47):
But you wouldn't be able to send it to us. So nevermind. See you Johnny.

Johnny Jet (01:45:51):
Bye Johnny jet.

Leo Laporte (01:45:52):
Aye.

Mikah Sargent (01:45:52):
Johnny. This is alt Jay. Wait, is it? Yeah, it is. Yeah. Yeah. One of their more recent songs.

Leo Laporte (01:46:03):
This is not rock and roll.

Mikah Sargent (01:46:05):
Just give it a second. <Laugh> see. Press Lord knows.

Leo Laporte (01:46:11):
This is good. This is like that Wolf guy. You like,

Mikah Sargent (01:46:15):
Oh, Wolf Peck,

Leo Laporte (01:46:16):
Wolf pick.

Mikah Sargent (01:46:17):
<Laugh>.

Leo Laporte (01:46:18):
It sounds a little like Wolf Peck. Yeah.

Mikah Sargent (01:46:20):
I've

Leo Laporte (01:46:20):
Got a, you have a thing for that kind of pseudo rock ISS. What I call <laugh> pseudo rock pseudo young person's rock Leo report and young person. Mic Sargent. We're answering your calls. 88 88. Ask Leo. If you've got a tech, don't ask Mike about music, but if you've got a tech question, we would <laugh>

Mikah Sargent (01:46:37):
Who's you a young person who tell

Leo Laporte (01:46:39):
Me who should we take next? Mikah. You tell me I

Mikah Sargent (01:46:42):
Think we're going to Portugal.

Leo Laporte (01:46:43):
What

Mikah Sargent (01:46:44):
A man? John and Portugal.

Johnny Jet (01:46:46):
Hey, you know them?

Leo Laporte (01:46:47):
Yeah, no, it's not John actually actually, well go to John in second it's first. It's Susan, Susan in Friday Harbor, Washington. I didn't know. That was a place. Didn't it is. Hello, Susan. Hello?

Caller 5 (01:46:59):
Long time listener watched you when you were on television.

Leo Laporte (01:47:04):
When I was young. Yeah.

Caller 5 (01:47:06):
When we both were

Leo Laporte (01:47:08):
Young <laugh> 20 years ago. Yeah. Well, it's great to meet you, Susan. Thank you.

Caller 5 (01:47:14):
No, thank you too.

Leo Laporte (01:47:15):
Where's Friday Harbor. I wanna move to Washington. I'm thinking of moving up there. It's cooler, right? You didn't have a hundred degree temperatures this week, did you?

Caller 5 (01:47:23):
No,

Leo Laporte (01:47:24):
No,

Caller 5 (01:47:24):
No, we did not. No, we had, we had apparently there were 90 degree for a couple days last week, but I was in the high Arctic Romanian, Arctic on a pass on the Northwest passage cruise. And I'll

Leo Laporte (01:47:40):
I've always wanted to do that.

Caller 5 (01:47:43):
Yes, it was absolutely wonderful. It was we did Herdeg garden and started in Iceland

Leo Laporte (01:47:49):
And I I've been on the herde G <laugh> that's so cool. I was on the herde grit in nor <laugh>. Yeah, there you go. So you did the herde Gruin I call 'em the herde gin. I know that's not how you pronounce it, but I just like the way that sounds I, so you did the, her Gruin to the Arctic. Wow.

Caller 5 (01:48:09):
Yeah. To the high Arctic. Yes. From Iceland to Cambridge bay ook. It was, it was wonderful. It was absolutely

Leo Laporte (01:48:18):
Wonderful. Oh's an adventure. I'm very jealous. That sounds

Caller 5 (01:48:21):
Paid, paid the, paid the higher price. And it was very much worth it. Nice. And I took along my new cannon E OS with the 100 to 500 brilliant millimeter lens and was brilliant out on the, on the deck and took lots of bird and animals. And I had this very heavy laptop that I need to replace because I don't wanna carry a heavy laptop, a 15 year old heavy laptop with, to do photo editing. Yeah. But so I have several things that I'd like to replace now. And the first is my iPad pro, which is a 2016 model. And oh,

Leo Laporte (01:49:04):
Before we go any further wait. Yes. That's your first, next month.

Caller 5 (01:49:10):
Okay. That's what I

Leo Laporte (01:49:11):
Thought next month's new iPads, both the base model. The, I don't know what this model will be iPad eight or 11 or something. And I think we're thinking new iPad pro as well. Yeah. It's time. And that is, I have the iPad pro with the M one chip. So that's a, you wouldn't need to bring a laptop for, in fact it's a better photo editing device than any laptop. Cause it has a better screen, more photo re you know, the accuracy of the screen is superb and touch is great for photo editing. So I am very happy to edit all my photos on the iPad.

Caller 5 (01:49:43):
Okay. All right. So October that comes out supposedly

Leo Laporte (01:49:47):
Next month. Yes.

Caller 5 (01:49:49):
Okay. Okay. Almost

Leo Laporte (01:49:50):
I would say almost certainly.

Caller 5 (01:49:53):
Almost certainly. Yes. Okay. I thought I should wait. That's why I'm asking. Yep. Also I'm, I'm learning this with a friend and in a laptop we're using AC D C and he says, you know, you are such touch screen in your editing on your iPhone, you really need a different photo editing. Which one should I get

Leo Laporte (01:50:15):
From? Well, when you get your new iPad, there's a lot of good choices. Yeah. What do you like? I know I like pixel made photo me too superb on iPad because it is purpose built to be an excellent photo editing application. There. It has amazing features like you could erase stuff you know, smarter erase. It's really good. It was $5. I think it's probably a little more, but it's not much, I would suggest three programs. Certainly pixel made pro I would also get dark room. Dark room has more, is more filter focused, but that sometimes, you know, you've got a great shot. All you wanna do is make it a beautiful high contrast, black and white shot, which I think with the polar bears in the snow would be great. That's a good way to do that. And then affinity photo is really Photoshop for the iPad altogether. All three will cost you one 10th of what Photoshop would cost you alone. Beautiful. And these are, if you have those three photo editing programs, you've got the crem lock crem. Mm-Hmm, <affirmative>, they'll all three handle raw from that cannon. So you can shoot raw. So what your iPad? The only thing I would say is get a lot of storage.

Caller 5 (01:51:25):
Okay.

Leo Laporte (01:51:26):
So they, they will offer, I got a two te believe it or not two terabyte, iPad. That's probably overkill, but, but you might want the one terabyte, just look at how many photos you took and how much space they took up. And that's how much you'll need. Okay. Because you're not, you can offload it once you get home, but you want enough room for all the pictures you're gonna shoot on any given trip.

Caller 5 (01:51:47):
Yeah. Okay. Great. second question is I have this laptop esperan nitro. And I'm thinking about, I do both PC and iOS, but I'm thinking, and I have a desktop that's a PC. This laptop is getting old

Leo Laporte (01:52:10):
15 years old. 15 years old. Yeah.

Caller 5 (01:52:14):
Wow. 2016. Oh, oh, I guess not

Leo Laporte (01:52:17):
Six years old. 16. Oh, that's a relief. Yeah. Sorry. <Laugh> I was impressed. I estimate that, you know, how they always talk about dog years equals seven dog years is one human year, right? Yeah. Laptops is about 15 mm-hmm <affirmative>. So a six year old laptop is 90 years old, a 15 year old laptop. <Laugh> I can't even do the math. It's so old. Yes. So it's it's like several centuries ago. So yeah. Use time for a new, nice new laptop. I would get a Mac since you're getting an iPad, but it's up to you.

Caller 5 (01:52:49):
Okay. The Mac pro or a Mac

Leo Laporte (01:52:52):
M one Mac

Mikah Sargent (01:52:53):
I would say the air, the new air,

Leo Laporte (01:52:55):
You got the M two air. Yeah.

Mikah Sargent (01:52:56):
It's so powerful that like, I, I I've, I've used affinity. I've used pixel made pro I've used these applications on it and it does not sweat at all. And the thing that you're gonna love Susan is that there may be times where you want to use, you know, the, the keyboard shortcuts and the, the track pad to be able to do stuff with editing your photos, or maybe even just the organization part. And because it's so lightly, I do like that is where you're really gonna be happy to be able to bring that along. You've got your, if you've got an iPad and your MacBook air kind of right next to each other, you can use that iPad as the device for doing the photo editing, but then the MacBook air can serve as the, the sort of area for everything else. So I really think that you wouldn't need to do more than that unless you really felt like you were gonna be doing lots of, you know, deep processing with these photos. But I just took some, I, I did some recent crochet projects and I like to use a better camera to take photos of those. So it really shows the stitches and I shoot those in raw. I pulled them up on my MacBook, this M two MacBook I have, and it didn't sweat at all with them.

Caller 5 (01:54:03):
Sounds good. Which keyboard should I get with the new iPad pro that I'm getting? I

Leo Laporte (01:54:08):
Like, just get, just get apples,

Caller 5 (01:54:09):
A keyboard that lights up. Oh,

Leo Laporte (01:54:11):
It lights up.

Mikah Sargent (01:54:11):
Yeah. The one that comes with

Leo Laporte (01:54:13):
That, just get apples. I've tried all the other ones, the bridge and the Logitech. And they're disappointing in a variety of ways. One of which is they add a huge amount of weight. The apple is, I want lights. Yeah. Apples is just fine. And that's what I use.

Caller 5 (01:54:27):
Okay. Should and I'm up for an apple watch. How does it compare to the garment extreme sport? And I do snorkel.

Leo Laporte (01:54:35):
I think the new ultra is very comparable.

Mikah Sargent (01:54:39):
It's it's on par with the, like

Leo Laporte (01:54:43):
The biggest difference in garment was quick to tweet. This is battery life. Mm-Hmm, <affirmative>, you'll get, they say 36 hours, day and a half battery life on the apple watch. Garment says we have six days, but I find I'm I'm charging every night, no matter what. So if, if that's part of your routine, cuz you charge your phone every night. I do, I, I don't think battery life is an issue. Yeah,

Mikah Sargent (01:55:05):
Man. Snorkeling going to the Arctic, I kind of wanna, you

Leo Laporte (01:55:08):
Know what it has that I really like the you the now because of the, because of scuba gloves, it's got much bigger buttons and knobs. You twirl the knob and it goes to red. Yeah. A night mode. I like that. So you could do, you know, astronomy or swimming. I think it's gonna be a very nice watch, but we we'll have one in a week. We'll you know, Leo and MIkah, your tech guys. Yeah. I mean, I, you know, they're because it's not out yet. There are no reviews yet. So we don't know. And people who have their garment extremes, you, you have one now.

Caller 5 (01:55:41):
No. I have a friend who loves it. It,

Leo Laporte (01:55:43):
Yeah, they are fanatical about it. Yeah. I think Apple's aiming straight at it. Mm-Hmm <affirmative> but who knows if it'll be better? I mean, that's the thing, how many journalists tech journalists that are getting early access to this are also people who snorkel. Yeah. You don't want some fat guy. <Laugh> not you me <laugh> but I do snorkel. I love to snorkel and I love to scuba, so I will try it that way, but it won't be for a year or so. I wanna see you scuba with it. That be amazing. I love scuba. And so it it's a, it has a, it's a dive watch. Mm-Hmm, <affirmative> a full on dive computer with the app at third party app. And you can get that. What is it? The Hummish swish watch app or whatever, so,

Caller 5 (01:56:30):
Okay. So I'll wait and hear what you say about the ultra.

Leo Laporte (01:56:32):
I wouldn't wait and see what we say. I would wait, I would read, you know, the extreme sports magazines. Yeah. There's cause what you want is a head to head versus the ultra versus the garment and, and you know, which is better. It is cheaper than the Garin by a couple hundred bucks. But that's, you know, you're spending a lot of money for that watch. So I, I think ultimately Apple's advantage is they're a juggernaut and they have resources far beyond anything. Garment has. Absolutely. So if apple wants to beat Garin, they just flip a switch. They do because they just throw money at it. And I think they benefit a lot from the way they study these things. You know, my, my, my gut is it's gonna be at least as good as the garment and it has two, like the garment, it has two GPS receivers. It has. So it can triangulate. It has the emergency feature, which I think is interesting crash protection, which I Garman does not have

Caller 5 (01:57:30):
I kayak too. Yeah. Kayak too on the west side. Yeah. Than when I,

Leo Laporte (01:57:34):
Yeah, I think this is a good watch for a kayaker. I really do. I wanna be you when I grow up. I know <laugh> you, you are an extreme sports fanatic.

Caller 5 (01:57:43):
Pretty lucky. Pretty lucky. Well,

Leo Laporte (01:57:46):
That's why you live in port Friday or wherever. Where is Friday Harbor? Oh,

Caller 5 (01:57:49):
Friday Harbor, the San Juan island.

Leo Laporte (01:57:52):
Oh, I'm so jealous.

Caller 5 (01:57:53):
Vancouver

Leo Laporte (01:57:53):
Island. Yeah. I know where San Juans are. Oh, you're really up there. So you are an adventurer. I

Caller 5 (01:58:00):
I hope so. Yes. I try. Nice.

Leo Laporte (01:58:03):
You know what? I want your review of the apple. Yeah. Right. <Laugh> that's who's review. You wanna read somebody like you's review also,

Caller 5 (01:58:11):
I'm also interested in the health benefits because I am a cardiovascular intensive care nurse retired and I like the health aspect.

Leo Laporte (01:58:20):
Well, I think again, apple has the lead by far in that, and they have decided they've made that a key part of their business. So I think Apple's always gonna be ahead of anybody in that regard for AFib and you know, a lot of various irregular hard irregularities. I think it's a really amazing device, but I think what you would want to get, if you had it, is the cardio K a R D I a, I don't know if you're familiar with that.

Caller 5 (01:58:50):
I've heard of it.

Leo Laporte (01:58:51):
Yeah. So that's gonna be more accurate if, if, if I were an AFib patient Jeff Jarvis was he's his cardiologist said get the cardio. And he uses that if any time he, you know, he, it all concerned and it'll give you a fair, it's still only a two lead EKG. It's not, you know, anything like a hospital EKG, but it, but he, but he extends it directly to the physician and the physician can say, yeah, get in here or take your meds or whatever. And oh yeah. That's gonna be very interesting. Yeah. K a R D I a.com. Got it. But I, but I, and, and that works with any phone that doesn't require an apple watch, but the apple watch, I, you know, oh, it's also gonna do temperature. It's gonna it's it's interesting. There it's very limited because of where it is on your wrist. It can't really do a good AKG or even

Caller 5 (01:59:44):
Go ahead. Just new water temperature. Cause it's 54 degrees water temperature.

Leo Laporte (01:59:48):
It does water. Temperature. Yeah. It'll measure your water. Temperature's a, the, it has that full feature as part of the dive computer. Oh man.

Caller 5 (01:59:55):
I can't wait. Beautiful.

Leo Laporte (01:59:56):
I, this may make me in a stream. Sportsman. Yeah. Yeah. I may. I may go treking. See, there's the aspirational aspect. <Laugh> Hey, it's a pleasure meeting you Susan. Oh, the San Juan islands. I'm so jealous. You guys. How beautiful.

Caller 5 (02:00:09):
Oh, come up sometime.

Leo Laporte (02:00:10):
I will. We wanna move? We wanna move up there. I just so beautiful up there. I don't think we'll that get at far north, but yeah, I think it's beautiful and I, it's not burning down, which is another benefit. That is a benefit. Indeed. Thanks Susan. Take care.

Caller 5 (02:00:24):
Take care. You guys. Thank you. Bye-Bye

Leo Laporte (02:00:26):
Portugal. The man coming up. <Laugh> I feel bad. We, we put him on hold, John. Oh, here I'll press the button. Now, John, we're gonna go to you in a few minutes. Can you hang on?

Caller 6 (02:00:40):
Oh yeah. Yeah. I'm just on Google voice. It's free of the

Leo Laporte (02:00:44):
Free is the wind. Oh, you're the guy who retired to the Algarve.

Caller 6 (02:00:48):
Yes,

Leo Laporte (02:00:49):
Sir. I'm so jealous. Another person I'm jealous of. <Laugh> I get Washington. I'm going to Portugal now. It's Cyberport. You're still happy. Do you go to Spain at all? You said you were gonna be able to go to Spain a lot.

Caller 6 (02:00:59):
Yeah, we're right across. I can see Spain from my house. We're right across the river. So we go there all the time.

Leo Laporte (02:01:04):
Oh, I'm so jealous. I'm so jealous. That's wonderful. Cause yeah. Cuz you have a Shein passport now. Yeah. Actually do you or not? Did you, did you did you take residency?

Caller 6 (02:01:15):
Yes. Cuz we have, we have residency like per temporary residency. Yeah. And then after two years we'll have permanent residency. And then after that we'll have dual citizen.

Leo Laporte (02:01:24):
You had to learn a little Portuguese to do that. Right?

Caller 6 (02:01:29):
That's

Leo Laporte (02:01:29):
It? No,

Caller 6 (02:01:32):
No. You have, you have to learn. Yeah. To in five years we have to pass a test. But it's very basic and I could probably already pass it.

Leo Laporte (02:01:39):
Good. So, okay. Yeah. That scared me a little bit. That's like the Morse code test for your ham license. <Laugh> that's the one extra little thing. And, and did you have to make an investment or just bring a certain amount of money in with you? What's the

Caller 6 (02:01:52):
No, no, because we've got a residency visa, D seven visa. It was a minimum amount of income, which is not very much it's it's only, you know, and passive income they're looking for, for the

Leo Laporte (02:02:02):
Retirees. Yeah. Retirement income. That's what I have. Yeah,

Caller 6 (02:02:04):
Yeah. Yeah. So in, in, in the, the, the, the minimum, the average wage here is only about a thousand euros a month. Wow. And you only have to make that, but to BOL your case, it, you know, you should be a little bit more than that, but, you know, we did. Okay. From moving from Santa Cruz, you know, so, oh,

Leo Laporte (02:02:22):
So jealous. So and, and it's been, you've been on a year now, right?

Caller 6 (02:02:30):
Yeah. About a year and four months. Yeah. Have

Leo Laporte (02:02:32):
You have you

Caller 6 (02:02:32):
A call from, from Santa Cruz? John? I remember

Leo Laporte (02:02:35):
Moved to San Cruz. No, I remember. I remember the whole story. Yeah. Did you, so you've acclimated pretty well. You're happy you don't miss a home.

Caller 6 (02:02:43):
No, no. We no, not at all because you know, a, a lot of the, we're not we're just on the podcast. Right. So it's yes. Yeah. A lot of it was cuz of the, you know, 2016. Yeah. You know, we don't yeah. You

Leo Laporte (02:02:56):
Know, you tell me what happens in November and that's yeah.

Caller 6 (02:02:59):
Flags hanging out the

Leo Laporte (02:03:00):
Back. Yeah. Coming of, if, if exactly. <Laugh>

Caller 6 (02:03:03):
A neutral way to say it is Portugal in the, in the, in the, in the global rankings. It's like the fourth safest country on. I

Leo Laporte (02:03:10):
Know I've been looking at those rankings. I know.

Caller 6 (02:03:14):
So you think of it from a, you know, we're man and that's easy. You just think about it, but from a woman's perspective. Yeah. It, if they, my wife can walk around, you know, at two in the morning, if she wanted to, not like she's doing that, but no,

Leo Laporte (02:03:26):
You know, I'm gonna cry,

Caller 6 (02:03:27):
It's it? It is just, you know, the people are welcoming. It's super safe. Wow. And it's a social democracy. Once you get residency, you have universal healthcare, you know? All

Leo Laporte (02:03:39):
Right. I'm gonna do some recent Portugal now let's TWI to Portugal. Let's bring it on

Caller 6 (02:03:42):
Guys. Mike, come on over.

Leo Laporte (02:03:44):
We're ready. That's great. We are so ready.

Caller 6 (02:03:48):
Yeah. I mean, it's not Shangrila I mean, you bring yourself. Yeah,

Leo Laporte (02:03:51):
Of course. No, I understand. You know? Yeah. And did you get an apartment or a house? What did you decide to do?

Caller 6 (02:03:56):
We bought a Villa. So it's, we're in a historic district.

Leo Laporte (02:04:01):
That's okay. Okay. Too much. No, <laugh>

Caller 6 (02:04:05):
You know, we come out the door and there's the bars and the restaurants and everything. Oh

Leo Laporte (02:04:09):
My word. I'll tell you why. I want to go two words. Hamon. Iberical ham. Something. Spanish ham. Oh, just Spanish. Yeah.

Caller 6 (02:04:18):
Oh yeah. We go over into the stores over in Spain and they just have the I'm a, I'm a vegan. They

Leo Laporte (02:04:23):
Have, oh, well you don't know anything about it, but they have the, a whole leg, a lamb or ham out there. Yeah. You wouldn't eat. Yeah. Easy to be vegan there. I bet it is actually,

Caller 6 (02:04:33):
It is because of the you know, the prices of everything. Yeah. Right. Like we have the same inflation problem, but I mean it's so the food is so much less expensive than the EU standard. Like you don't have to worry about organic as much and stuff. It's like the food is fresh and not as many nasty pesticides and all that good stuff.

Leo Laporte (02:04:53):
Egg plant PE PEY. Here I come. All right, hang on. We're gonna now be on the show. Well, Hey, Hey. Hey. How are you today? Leo Laport mic a Sargent, your tech guys on the radio. Eighty eight eighty eight. Ask Leo is the phone number eight eighty eight, eight two seven five five three six. Toll free from anywhere in the us or Canada. Or you can call us with Google voice like John did from Portugal and it should cost you nothing website where we put all the good stuff. Tech guy labs.com. John on the line from the, is it, is it the Algarve in Portugal? On the down in the south side there?

Caller 6 (02:05:34):
Yes. We're in the town called Villa field descent, Antonio in the extreme Southeastern portion of the country right on the Spanish border. Oh,

Leo Laporte (02:05:42):
Beautiful. Did you go to the F1 race? <Laugh>

Caller 6 (02:05:46):
The, I, it, it was really COVID the one in port ofout. Yeah. so it was very restricted and oh, they do. And it amazing. They even pulled it off, but this year it wasn't on the schedule, but they do have the Moto GP

Leo Laporte (02:05:57):
There. Oh, fun port. Ofout it's the only place in Portugal I've been. But it's beautiful. Beautiful beach. Well, John, I, some of you will remember, we talked to John a year and a half ago. He is, he was living in Santa Cruz, thinking about retiring to Portugal. And I guess you're staying.

Caller 6 (02:06:14):
Oh yeah. Yeah. It's it's just great. The expat community here, the people are super friendly. It's ranked as it, it, it varies between the third and fifth safest country. Nice. And the planet, you know, all those Scandinavian countries always come in first, but Portugal, surprisingly is one of the safest,

Leo Laporte (02:06:32):
Well, I'm very jealous, but that's okay. I'll get to live vicariously through your adventures. What can we, what can we do to help you with your technology?

Caller 6 (02:06:42):
Okay. There was a, a dimming discussion about the Sony and that got me thinking about my problem and it it's interesting it's cuz it's I took Scott's advice and your advice and bought my first O lead. Yay. And it dims during the day. Right. And when it happens, when I'm watching a static show, like I'm such a super fan, I'm one of these crazy nerds that watches TWI

Leo Laporte (02:07:10):
Live our podcast. Thank you on the TV.

Caller 6 (02:07:13):
Thank

Leo Laporte (02:07:13):
You, John. That's very nice of you. And we're gonna burn in your monitor cuz we leave our logos up all the time. I'm sorry. The

Caller 6 (02:07:20):
Logo, the new, the new tech eye logo with the circle and the Marconey tower or

Leo Laporte (02:07:23):
Whatever that thing is, that's gonna get burned into your TV. <Laugh>

Caller 6 (02:07:26):
Yeah. And I'm, I'm like

Leo Laporte (02:07:27):
Here, I'll take it down right now is back <laugh> have you seen any burn OED? Do burn in but all OED screens really work hard not to burn in. They do the dimming, but they also do something called pixel shifting where they actually imperceptively will shift one pixel over they'll rotate through the pixels in order to prevent image retention. That's pretty effective. I I've had an all led TV for five or six years now with zero burn. The dimming though. I, yeah, that could be, that would be annoying while you're watching it.

Caller 6 (02:08:09):
Yes, it comes up. It it's weird because it's during, we get a lot of ambient light and I know Scott F with the old LEDs, it's not good to watch it in a bright room, but this is even in that condition. This is the best TV I've ever owned.

Leo Laporte (02:08:21):
Oh, it's amazing. Isn't it.

Caller 6 (02:08:23):
But if I'm sitting, watching, if I'm watching TWI you know, even if it's the re it's U a replay cuz of the time difference, usually I don't get to watch live like right

Leo Laporte (02:08:33):
Now. What time is it now? It's like nine or 10, right?

Caller 6 (02:08:37):
Yeah. It's 9 0 9. Yeah. Yeah.

Leo Laporte (02:08:39):
Nine at nine.

Caller 6 (02:08:39):
Yeah. It, it it'll be the normal brightness. And then it'll dim like super dark after about five minutes. Exactly. And then I have to pause it and do something else. And

Leo Laporte (02:08:49):
I think you could turn that off. If you go into the menu, there's probably an eco mode and you being a conscious good person in the setup probably said, yeah, yeah. Do the eco mode. But that may be a side effect of that eco mode.

Caller 6 (02:09:06):
Okay.

Leo Laporte (02:09:07):
So almost certainly that and that, you know, it sh it shouldn't do that if you're watching it. Right. I don't know how it would know if you're watching or not. Are you, are you watching from

Caller 6 (02:09:17):
A smart app or does it, I, I, I found some Reddits and stuff that said that it happened and this, this light shifting of the blacks and stuff, when you're watching game of Thrones or something, but this is the only time it happens. If I'm watching the,

Leo Laporte (02:09:32):
Yeah. This is different than, than what Scott was talking about with the Sony where they, they actually dim for other reasons, I guess, to not, I don't know why, but it's because the room has gotten bright, I guess, but I don't think that's a good thing to do. But that this is different. This sounds like it's to prevent, do you think it,

Caller 6 (02:09:53):
Leo, do you think it's the TV doing it? I'm I'm using a Roku and express VPN. That's how I can use a Roku over here. Yeah. I'm using a Roku ultra, the latest Roku, and I'm using the O lid. Do you think it's the TV dimming it or could it be the Roku?

Leo Laporte (02:10:09):
I could, I mean, guess it could be the Roku. Roku does have a, you know, a, a screensaver that comes on and it may even, yeah. That's just like a computer dim before it goes to the screensaver. All computers, you know, will have that setting where you dim it if, but this is when you're not using it. The thing is the computer knows whether you're using it or not. If the mouse is being moved or the keyboard's being touched, they know TV doesn't have, you know, any real idea, especially if you're watching streaming from the TV's point of view, it could be, you're not home. So I don't, that's how that is.

Mikah Sargent (02:10:43):
Interesting question. A good bit of advice in the, the the chat, which is that try using the built in YouTube app on your TV. You almost certainly have one as a smart TV and watch the live stream and see if it happens there.

Leo Laporte (02:10:58):
You can also watch after the fact on the YouTube. Yes. Every show has its own YouTube channel on our podcast.

Mikah Sargent (02:11:03):
And in that way you would be able to tell then if it's the Roku or if it's the TV itself that's causing that

Caller 6 (02:11:09):
That, that's a great idea. I haven't, I haven't used that AB testing on that, that, because it definitely has that smart feature in there. It has YouTube app.

Leo Laporte (02:11:16):
Yeah. so Mike Mann in the chat room says the podcasts have very little movement, which is true. That's also true. Yeah. But we sh we do do take two, take three. We have several cameras, so there'll be singles and there's some movements. That's

Mikah Sargent (02:11:30):
True. Yeah. They're switching between cameras.

Leo Laporte (02:11:31):
We're not moving cuz you know, we're just sitting here, but

Caller 6 (02:11:35):
What do you think the, what do you think the amount of safe time would be to, to watch a static show on an OED? Is there any kind of any testing? Is it like two hours or is it

Leo Laporte (02:11:46):
Well, there's a couple of things. Yeah. I wouldn't leave it on all day for sure. Many O LEDs when you turn them off, have a mode where they correct for image retention, that's, what's called technically with an O lead. I have an O lead monitor when I turn off. It says you want me to to, to, to, I don't know what that does massage the pixels.

Mikah Sargent (02:12:06):
Yeah. I think they call it pixel refresh for some

Leo Laporte (02:12:09):
Your TV's probably doing it automatically without asking you cuz that's annoying. So I suspect your TV, modern TVs are doing everything they can to keep from burning in. It's

Mikah Sargent (02:12:20):
Like how we used to have to unplug our devices whenever after we got done charging them these days, you don't have to worry about that. This is the same thing. If you've got a modern television, it has all of these protections in place. Yeah. so you don't necessarily,

Leo Laporte (02:12:32):
I wouldn't worry about it as much. Yeah. I really wouldn't. Okay. Do you leave it on all day and all night? I mean thank you. No,

Caller 6 (02:12:37):
No. There's time that, you know yeah. You know, some people they just watch the CNN scroll was on there, like

Leo Laporte (02:12:43):
Yeah, exactly. Get CNN burn. Yeah. At the gym that I see that on the TVs at the gym. Yeah.

Caller 6 (02:12:50):
The, the, the, the, the biggest static is watching, you know TWI on Wednesday or or, or your show on the weekend. <Laugh>

Leo Laporte (02:12:59):
Right.

Caller 6 (02:13:00):
And

Leo Laporte (02:13:00):
That's, I think you're fine. It, I think you're fine. The what's happening with an O lead. It's not so much burn as the fact that the different colors, the different pixels age at a different rate, this was always in the early days of O LEDs, the purple aged very quickly. And so you would get this kind of weird effect after just a few years on O led. They do a lot to fix that. But that's what it is. And I think you'd have to really be aggressively. It'd be like at the gym gym where it's on one channel day and night. Yeah. And I don't think you're doing that. I think you're all right.

Caller 6 (02:13:36):
Yep. Sounds good.

Leo Laporte (02:13:38):
Ah, go enjoy some Perry Perry for me.

Caller 6 (02:13:43):
I will, yeah. I, I can date. I can date myself. The first concert I saw was Def Leppard in 1978 in Boston. Wow.

Leo Laporte (02:13:51):
Now that must have been a good show. I could tell you

Caller 6 (02:13:55):
They were opening for like Judas priest

Leo Laporte (02:13:58):
And all these. It was back in the hair band days. I could tell you they're still pretty darn good. In 2022, they were very impressive. They're harmonies, they're guitar playing. They were very tight and they didn't have a lot of special effects on the stage. They didn't need 'em cuz they sounded great.

Caller 6 (02:14:13):
So that fun, fun,

Leo Laporte (02:14:14):
Pleasure talking to you for your help again. All right. Take care. Good soon. Byebye. Bye John. Eighty eight eighty eight. Ask Leo the phone number. Leo Laport, Mica Sargent. We are you'll tech guys. Mars S your call stepping up a little bit. You stay right here now. Okay. You're really enjoy it.

Mikah Sargent (02:14:47):
One of those

Leo Laporte (02:14:50):
From 1925 comes is this Al Joseph Eddie canter. The great Eddie Canor if you knew Susie, like I knew Susie, this is episode 1925. So I guess from now on, I can expect a, now that we've entered the recorded music era, professor Laura, a song from that year every week, let's try anyway. We won't promise. The reason you wanna know is because if you go to tech guy labs.com, all the shows are there, and this is episode 1925, and you can go there and get all the links that we've mentioned. Mm-Hmm <affirmative> in fact, I think we're helping people right now. You can also in the chat room, there's lots of information flowing. That'll get in there, plus you'll get a transcription of the show, audio and video from the show too, a few days after the fact. So it's kind of your one stop shop and it's free. It's free in 1925 in London, United Kingdom, John logy Baird successfully transmitted the first television pictures. And now here we are a hundred years later doing radio back to the <laugh>. Are you, are you blown away? Michael? I'm a little blown away. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's been a long time. I think Laura thought you did a 1925 must. I must

Mikah Sargent (02:16:11):
Have done. Oh, you do 25 radio voice while you were gone. And I was here.

Leo Laporte (02:16:15):
<Laugh> so you do do that. I guess I do you look bewildered?

Mikah Sargent (02:16:18):
I know I was caught off guard, but yeah. Who knows? I just, I break into accents and voices and songs all the time. That's good.

Leo Laporte (02:16:25):
I remember that. I do it. That bodes well for the, your future and radio young man. You're crazy. Yeah. Emil is on the line from Indianapolis, Indiana. Hello?

Caller 7 (02:16:36):
Hey Leo, can you hear

Leo Laporte (02:16:38):
Me? Yes. Welcome to the show.

Caller 7 (02:16:40):
Wow. Hey, what a pleasure? Long time. Thank you, mic. Yeah.

Leo Laporte (02:16:45):
Yeah. It's great to have you on what can we do for you?

Caller 7 (02:16:48):
Yeah, so I am trying to decide if I should get my daughter a apple watch. She's a second grader. We've been shopping around for a watch. There's like bunch of kids watch T-Mobile offers one where they can call mom and dad or nine one, one. So I, myself I'm thinking I should maybe get one. So I bought the ultra and then maybe my wife and everybody. So we were doing some testing for just recently to make sure that this was going to work because we never used apple watches before. And, and, and I'm an analog watch guy.

Leo Laporte (02:17:25):
Do you have an iPhone? First of all?

Caller 7 (02:17:27):
So my work forces me to get the iPhone <laugh> I did not wanted to get the apple watch for the longest time. And I'm with Andy and I was listening to your, you know, the live event during the apple event. And I did not like I on principle, I avoided getting the apple watch because it forces you to get an Android. And I'm sorry, an apple and I, I, I have to use an apple because my work workforce is me too

Leo Laporte (02:17:49):
Good. Cause there's no point in getting an apple watch unless you have an iPhone. Exactly. You must have it, but the good news is they also, and you, you probably aware of this, they have a way of setting up a kid's watch. So they don't have to have an iPhone only dad or mom has to have an iPhone. Right,

Caller 7 (02:18:04):
Right, right. So that's not the question. So, so I just got the se like on nine five, right. A few days ago, the event for my wife, then we activated it and then I just canceled it already. I'm returning that. But we did an experiment where I put my wife's phone on airplane mode. Then I called the watch T-Mobile's website has like a unique new number for the right. Right. So I call that number it's and the number that I'm phone I was using to call was my work phone, which is a Verizon iPhone. It said like, Verizon cannot complete this call because I don't know. Right. So, so that didn't work. Then I called my wife's number, which is, you know, a T-Mobile number. I called that it went to her voicemail because that, that is a, that is a little airplane mode. Right? normally if it is not on airplane mode, the watch rings, he can walk around the house. He, she was driving one time. So we were sold on the apple watch. It was gonna work great. Except if let's say I was, I was out and about without my phone and with just my watch, is that possible? Would that work?

Leo Laporte (02:19:11):
This is actually a really good question. Obviously you'd need cellular, get the watch with cellular. Yes. That's I sign that's a given. Right? So that way it has, and, and you, and you know that cuz it has a phone number mm-hmm <affirmative> I would, you know, honestly for a second grader, what do, what do you want? You wanna know where she is and you wanted to be able to reach mom and you want mom to be able to reach her, is that, or so this,

Caller 7 (02:19:35):
All the right and all the kids in the neighborhood, they have this little thing. They sell it on Amazon and, and, and T-Mobile sells it. Right. Do you have to have a watch plan at least $10? That's like normal and, and they can call. So most of the time they can call the numbers that is configured, usually it's parents' number. Right. And then I think they can call 9 1 1. So that was the one we were about to get, we've been researching for,

Leo Laporte (02:19:58):
Like, is that the sync up?

Caller 7 (02:20:01):
It's it's the only one that T-Mobile offered.

Leo Laporte (02:20:02):
Yeah. I think that's the sync up. Yeah. so there is an advantage to getting it from T-Mobile, you know, and it is a kid's watch. And it's, you know, as a result, it's gonna be less expensive and T-Mobile will right

Caller 7 (02:20:17):
David. Right. But they're practically giving away a SC and I bought the ALCA. So I already bought a SC for my it's on the way, the new one. So

Leo Laporte (02:20:25):
Can he make a can't even call or watch?

Mikah Sargent (02:20:27):
I think you can place calls from the apple watch when it is not connected to a phone, but I am not seeing anything that suggests you can call,

Caller 7 (02:20:36):
Like, can I leave my phone behind? Right,

Mikah Sargent (02:20:37):
Right,

Caller 7 (02:20:38):
Right, right, right. Can I leave my phone behind? Yeah.

Leo Laporte (02:20:40):
I'm turning my phone off.

Mikah Sargent (02:20:42):
Yeah. Let's let's

Leo Laporte (02:20:43):
And you can call my call. My, oh, I don't know what my watch number is.

Mikah Sargent (02:20:46):
I think so for you, you are, are you on at and T or Verizon?

Leo Laporte (02:20:50):
T-Mobile. Oh,

Mikah Sargent (02:20:51):
You're on T-Mobile. Okay. So I don't know how T-Mobile does it, but at and T and Verizon, they do a pairing where your phone number is.

Leo Laporte (02:20:56):
Yeah, I think that's the same. So call my, my regular number. I will call, you know, the 9, 7 1 number only MIkah has this number five, five number mine. Even my, my wife knows this number. <Laugh> okay. He's gonna call I've turned off my phone. So the phone is no longer in proximity to the watch. Does it go straight to voicemail or does it I'm

Mikah Sargent (02:21:15):
Calling now?

Leo Laporte (02:21:15):
Does it call my watch? All right here. It's funny. You would think we would know this. Yeah,

Mikah Sargent (02:21:19):
But I've never,

Leo Laporte (02:21:20):
I get calls on my watch all the time, but I've never without my phone. I think it went to voicemail.

Mikah Sargent (02:21:25):
Yeah. It went to

Leo Laporte (02:21:26):
Voicemail. Voice to voicemail. Did not ring my, my watch. Yeah.

Mikah Sargent (02:21:28):
I think you can only place calls, not receive

Leo Laporte (02:21:32):
That outbound. Not inbound. I think that sounds right. Yeah. So I could, so that's probably not what you want.

Caller 7 (02:21:39):
No, I want to receive the call at least. So at least what I know, I think was going to happen is I give this to my daughter, set it up as my, you know, kids' profile. I think, I believe she will be able to do what the sync cup watch can do. I think that's a given that's right. I just wanted, yeah. And I just wanna make sure. So my wife wasn't sure. So we did an I'm an engineer and she's a scientist. So we, Lucy, ah, I love it. Experiment.

Leo Laporte (02:22:00):
So you did a real experiment. That's awesome. Right.

Caller 7 (02:22:03):
Right. And, and it, it did much serve that purpose, but now I'm committed. I'm already like three apple watches on its way. And can, can

Leo Laporte (02:22:11):
You text, you could text the watch.

Mikah Sargent (02:22:13):
Yes. Yeah.

Leo Laporte (02:22:14):
So you could send text messages, which your child will see.

Mikah Sargent (02:22:17):
Yeah. If you're all on iMessage, then those will go through. I'm not, I don't know if SMS texts,

Leo Laporte (02:22:21):
But you cannot call it. She can call emergency services.

Mikah Sargent (02:22:24):
And can you

Leo Laporte (02:22:25):
Anybody?

Mikah Sargent (02:22:25):
Yeah. No,

Caller 7 (02:22:27):
No. Yeah. So that, I don't think it's gonna be a problem. So you can have the apple watch. I was just, now it seems like I, myself will have to make sure I have my phone with me and the watch, if I wanna make sure I get a call from my wife or anybody on the watch. On

Leo Laporte (02:22:41):
The watch. Yes.

Caller 7 (02:22:42):
Right, right. So maybe

Leo Laporte (02:22:44):
No, no. Yeah. I guess so I thought that they wanted it. So you could run without your phone and answer the phone. Yeah. So did I, I think the ultra will do that. I'm betting the ultra will do that. This is a

Caller 7 (02:22:54):
Big question, ultra. I'm

Leo Laporte (02:22:56):
Gonna do some, you're getting the ultra. You let us, you let us know. I'm all. Yeah. I

Mikah Sargent (02:22:59):
Don't look into this one too. Get

Caller 7 (02:23:00):
You I'm with you all the way. We'll

Leo Laporte (02:23:03):
Figure this out. Keep listening. Maybe we'll come up with an answer. Leo and MIkah, your tech guys. That's a really interesting question. I don't, cause I, we should know this. I

Mikah Sargent (02:23:11):
Just assumed that it worked that way.

Leo Laporte (02:23:13):
But we just verified that you, you can't call me when my phone is off. Right. It just, it so the phone need to be on. Does the phone have, if the phone were not in proximity to the watch, would it work?

Mikah Sargent (02:23:30):
If the phone is not in proximity to the

Leo Laporte (02:23:32):
Watch? Like, like I left the phone at home, see that wasn't a real test because yeah. What if I left the phone at home? Could you then call my watch? I

Mikah Sargent (02:23:41):
Don't think so. Because it seemed what, what I'm reading from the support documents that are available is that you can call from the watch, but

Leo Laporte (02:23:50):
You can call to, to the watch. Should I put the phone somewhere? Let me, let me

Mikah Sargent (02:23:58):
I don't know if you can get it far enough way

Leo Laporte (02:23:59):
Cuz it's well, I'm on the same wifi and that's probably a problem.

Mikah Sargent (02:24:02):
Just turn off wifi on your phone. That would be enough.

Leo Laporte (02:24:05):
Okay. Yeah. Going to airplane mode, right? No. Would that work? I think no airplane mode would turn off the cellular. Oh

Mikah Sargent (02:24:12):
Yeah.

Leo Laporte (02:24:12):
That's true. So I'll just turn off the, I'm all we need your wife, the scientist to help us here. <Laugh> we cannot, we can't come up with an experiment.

Caller 7 (02:24:21):
I actually have been to a apple like in Fox, on factory. Right. Installing any equipment. Wow. Can send you and they sell, they sell an apple watch. That looks like an apple watch. You put a SIM card in <laugh>. You can that's terrible. They, they can, they, they look, it looks like a real, oh yeah, watch it pretty much. But you can put a SIM card in, it's running Android with an apple skin. Wow. And you can call, call you can't buy it in America obviously. Right. So yeah, this is a disappointment, but I avoided apple watch. Not because you know, I mean, you don't need, you should have something that's like untethered and you can rely on like you want it's okay. I can pay for the service. Even the satellite. I don't, you know, but I wanna get call and receive call. I thought that was given, but maybe it's not, or I don't know. Confused.

Leo Laporte (02:25:04):
Now I'm now confused. You've confused. Me too. And I, I don't know what the answer is on this one. I'm really,

Caller 7 (02:25:10):
I do have an answer for MIkah. I was listening at the top of the show without with the air AirPod pros mm-hmm <affirmative> so, so mine came off and I was, I couldn't figure out how to put it back together cuz it was torn. So in the packaging they had, you know, the other piece. So I put the new one in, it almost looks like they molded over on the plastic Silicon. So these pieces are like you know, plastic molded, Silicon molded over the plastic, the chips that are in ible on the airport trolls. So I think you guys talking about that at the beginning.

Leo Laporte (02:25:39):
I think you could just stretch it over, right? The hole he just stretches over. No, no,

Caller 7 (02:25:44):
No. The, the thing, individual pieces in the packaging, like if you open a, a part pro packaging, you have the spare kits. If you look underneath, they almost have like mesh drill. They almost have a rim though. They do have a plastic piece. Each of them do. And then there is a white Silicon over it. So that's like a two piece plastic.

Leo Laporte (02:26:01):
So it would have to fit. There's a hard plastic collar.

Caller 7 (02:26:05):
Not only that, not only that like, so I accidentally drop everything on the, on the floor and then they label it left and right on the, on the, on the, on the box. But if you wanna put it back together, it's in distinguishable. <Laugh> how do you know which one's left and which one? Right?

Leo Laporte (02:26:20):
So the left and right are different.

Caller 7 (02:26:22):
And then the housing is made out of paper. So when you take it out, you don't know, and it's not indented in a certain way that it fit. You think apple designs it. So you can't go, you know, like bulk, but, but now it's dropped. I don't know which one's left, but

Leo Laporte (02:26:34):
You need to bring it to the apple store where the genius will wave a wand over it. That it has a special R F I D in it. And it will tell you, they

Caller 7 (02:26:44):
Got, they have the tip thing. They have the app where you can excited it to ear candle. So that's okay. <Laugh> you can try all of those combinations until it fits just right,

Leo Laporte (02:26:53):
Right. No wonder you hate apple am all I understand now hate

Caller 7 (02:26:56):
I'm a fanboy. No, I'm a fanboy.

Leo Laporte (02:26:58):
Oh, you're a fanboy. I love

Caller 7 (02:26:59):
Android because I can, you know, mud and

Leo Laporte (02:27:02):
I can, yeah. You wanna hack it? Yeah. Which Android? Which Android phone do you like?

Caller 7 (02:27:08):
I don't have one now. Well I, I had that Samsung, but I really, I don't know. All of them are awesome. Pixel, last one that I have right now that I, that I keep as a backup for emergencies is a pixel two Excel. Oh wow. Has my Bitcoin. Yeah, that has my cause. I'm not gonna repeat your mistake. So I have that as my, like a wallet as like a

Leo Laporte (02:27:27):
Oh good. I'm glad you've learned from my stupidity. Gotta run Amal. Thank you. Take care. Bye. Take care. <Laugh> no Leo Laport, MIkah Sargent your tech guys. 88 88, ask Leo. That's kind of embarrassing that here we have been using apple watches. You and I probably for seven or eight years. Never even thought about it. That's because we carry around iPhones everywhere we go. Can, can you call an apple watch if it is not in the presence of an iPhone now we've shown that if the iPhones turned off, it won't work and, and

Mikah Sargent (02:28:00):
We should also be clear that if you have wifi calling turned on, if you're connected to a wifi network from your apple, watch, it is, it will maybe work

Leo Laporte (02:28:10):
<Laugh> we just don't know. We just dunno. I am going to leave my phone at home tomorrow and you will call me. Okay. And we will see, all right. Apple is promoting though. And slowly moving towards the Dick Tracy idea because the new apple watch ultra, they even mention this. You can place and receive calls from the apple watch ultra and they now have three microphones in it. Yeah. And stereos speakers cancellation and it's louder. And so they're really pushing, I think towards the idea of, and this has always been a question with apple Watchers. Do they, at some point, want this watch to stand alone or will it always be an accessory for the iPhone? Right? You saw Tim cook speaking at the de conference. Oh yeah, last week. And somebody asked Tim, you know, Google's had this big push to get apple to support Google's RCS protocol.

Leo Laporte (02:29:02):
It's an open standard, but Google's pushing it. And you know, apple enough with the green, blue bubbles, apple support RCS. So somebody asked Tim cook about that. He said to Tim, he said, you know, my my mom has a as an Android phone and she, we can't message with her. When are you? Are you gonna ever support RCS? And Tim's response, get her an iPhone. <Laugh> get her an iPhone. Yeah, not exactly responsive, but honestly that's what I always thought Apple's position was, no, we're not gonna do this. Cuz you need an iPhone. You should have an iPhone. Why don't you have an iPhone?

Mikah Sargent (02:29:42):
And I hate to, to now go back a little bit, but there is now a support document that shows use your apple watch without your iPhone nearby. Here's what you can do. Even when your iPhone isn't with you. Good. And one of the things that it says is both make and answer phone

Leo Laporte (02:29:59):
Calls. Okay?

Mikah Sargent (02:29:59):
Okay. So apparently you should be able to do this. I don't know why it didn't work for

Leo Laporte (02:30:03):
Us. Well, cuz my phone was off. So here's what I think has to happen. You make the phone call my phone then rings the watch. Even if I'm not in the presence of the watch cuz the watch has cellular. So my phone sends a signal to my wa I'm just making this up. My phone sends a signal to my watch saying you've gotta call. Cause you know, the watch will say, you've got a call when your phone rings. So the only question is, does it have to be proximate to the phone, right? To do that. And apparently Apple's saying no, your phone could be at home. It's still though has to be on Uhhuh and receiving phone calls. Yeah.

Mikah Sargent (02:30:34):
Okay. I like that

Leo Laporte (02:30:36):
Idea. We'll find out. I tell you what you take the show. I'm gonna go down the block. I'm gonna leave my phone in a tree. <Laugh> a, a comeback. No, let's not do this. Let's not that 88 88. Ask Leo Paul on the line from Venice beach, California. Hello Paul.

Speaker 14 (02:30:51):
Hey, I'm Mr. Leo. How you doing? So I

Leo Laporte (02:30:54):
Am well, Paul, how are you, sir?

Speaker 14 (02:30:56):
Good. You are a great philanthropist, you know, and I must say this is my first time calling. Thank you. I okay. I have iPhone 13 mini. I bought it on July, July this year and I wanna switch to Tesla, iPhone or iPhone for 10. What would you

Mikah Sargent (02:31:21):
Recommend?

Leo Laporte (02:31:21):
I would not is what I would recommend. You have a recent enough iPhone. In fact, this is a good question that comes up every time there's a new iPhone who should buy the new iPhone. And I think it's very clear that somebody with an iPhone 13, unless you don't like the mini, like the size is too small. Yeah. And you want a bigger phone then maybe, but there is nothing, in my opinion, you, you, MIkah, you get to weigh in on this too, but there's, you've actually seen it. I don't think there's anything in the iPhone 14 that would make you spend all that money. Two months later,

Mikah Sargent (02:31:52):
Don't spend all that money on the dynamic island or the slight upgrades to the photography. I mean, okay. I take this back. There's one instance where I may make this argument outside of like you said, switching sizes. And that's if like you're a new parent or have recently adopted a new animal and you want to get the best possible photos you can of said

Leo Laporte (02:32:14):
But how much better would they be?

Mikah Sargent (02:32:16):
Well with the 48 mega pixel, maybe a lot, maybe downscale to 12 pixel and especially here's what,

Leo Laporte (02:32:21):
Here's what low light. This is where the improvement

Mikah Sargent (02:32:23):
Is. Yes. And this is what people don't understand. Most photos that people are taking everyday, people are taking they're lowlight photos, people. When they think of lowlight photos, they're thinking, it means that the lights are off. No, the photos that many of us take doors are not taken with enough light. They are a higher light version of a low light photo.

Leo Laporte (02:32:40):
Yeah. Anything that's not outside,

Mikah Sargent (02:32:41):
Anything that's not outside is, is low, basically a light photo. So you, most of the photos you'd be taking will be improved. So if you are looking for a better camera, then yes, you'll see some updates. But I, I still think that if you've got the iPhone 13, unless you're ridiculous, like Leo and myself, well, you're actually operating from the 12 aren't you?

Leo Laporte (02:32:59):
Yeah, we have to. Yeah. In fact, I took a big chance not upgrading last year. And nobody looked funny at me. I, you know, because we supposedly we're supposed to keep up with these, but honestly I felt no obligation to go from the 12 to the 15.

Mikah Sargent (02:33:14):
Cause you stopped doing iOS today with me.

Leo Laporte (02:33:16):
<Laugh> maybe cuz I stopped doing the show <laugh> but I, frankly I wouldn't feel except for, you know, a little desire to cover this and so forth. I probably wouldn't feel like I had upgrade from the 12 to the 14. Right. And I think a lot of commentators have said that every year apple makes incremental upgrades this year, especially incremental the chip for instance, in the iPhone 14 and the 14 plus is the same chip as you have in your iPhone 13, no improvement at all. If you were to go to an iPhone 14 pro it's the new a 16 chip, but it's only a percent, a few percentage points faster, maybe 10% faster, probably not noticeably faster. 17% is the most I've seen. That's not enough to make it worth a thousand bucks. Now you're gonna get a trade in. Apple does offer trade-ins.

Leo Laporte (02:34:07):
And since you bought your iPhone 13 mini and two months ago, you might be able to get a decent price for it. So it might only be a few hundred dollars upgrade. So that's perhaps something to consider consider. There is no mini this year, the minis are gone. So the smallest phone you can get is 6.1 inches, which is pretty, pretty big compared to what you've got. Absolutely. and the, and the plus and the max are are 6.7 inches. It's even bigger. So you may not, you know, like that. I, I honestly think anybody with an iPhone, that's not more than a couple of years old. You should just stay where you are. I agree. I agree. Stay where you are. The watch even more so,

Mikah Sargent (02:34:44):
Oh yeah. The do not. If you've got the last series, the series seven apple watch almost certainly you should be not, you should not be upgrading unless you're going to the ultra, in which case you've got reasons for

Leo Laporte (02:34:54):
That. That's just a different product entirely, really

Mikah Sargent (02:34:56):
For, but from the series seven to the series eight, they're almost all of the new features for the apple watch are operating system features are watch OS features. So those software features will be available. Like I am running the beta of watch OS on this series, seven apple watch and I can do the cool way finding stuff with the compass app which was one of the new features. So

Leo Laporte (02:35:16):
There's, there's these little new features. If you can, I think it's worth going to apple and saying, look, here's a two month old.

Mikah Sargent (02:35:24):
Yeah.

Leo Laporte (02:35:25):
Signature iPhone, 13 mini, what will you give me for it? If they'll give you close to what you paid for it in order to buy a new phone, it might be, then it's a decision. Well, which phone am I gonna like better? Mm-Hmm <affirmative> so it is that's, you know, that's a little different, I, I certainly don't think you need to anybody with anything bef after the iPhone 11 probably does not need, shouldn't feel the need to upgrade. And it's really unfortunate cuz apple there's this whole marketing machine that goes into gear when apple releases a new iPhone, that really makes everybody feel like, oh, I have the old one. Yeah.

Mikah Sargent (02:36:01):
Is their main product. It is the, the thing that is

Leo Laporte (02:36:03):
Made more than half of their revenue comes from the iPhone. And they are brilliant at marketing. Nobody. There's no better company in the world at marketing than apple. And so they're very good at creating a false, I think of false need to upgrade. So what we're trying to do is give you, we're afraid to

Mikah Sargent (02:36:23):
Be cognizant

Leo Laporte (02:36:23):
Of that. Yeah. Antidote to that. They call it the reality distortion field. But

Mikah Sargent (02:36:27):
What about the Tesla phone?

Leo Laporte (02:36:29):
I never heard of a Tesla phone, so I don't know what you were talking about there. Paul, I'm afraid I can't help you. With, with that say hi to my friends on muscle beach, 88, 88 ask. Oh no, I'm not gonna give out the number cuz you know what I see, I see the, the fog machine is working. Check it out. They fired up the disco ball. There goes, I believe Dickie. Bartolo is next. Stay tuned. Everybody clapped. My hands are still sore from that concert. Every other song they said, put your hands together. Thank you very much. Let's get disco D in here. Disco. Dick D Bartolo mad magazine's mad writer and the gizz whiz. Hello? Dickie D

Dick DeBartolo (02:37:21):
Leo. How you doing?

Leo Laporte (02:37:22):
I welcome you with a toot of the hoo Zah <laugh> oh,

Dick DeBartolo (02:37:27):
Whoa. The Royal treatment over he's

Leo Laporte (02:37:30):
He's the, yes, this the fanfare. What are you? Do you Dick joins us every week with a cuckoo gadget or gizmo. That's why we call him our gizmo wizard or GWiz. But you may know the name, Dick de Bartolo. I bet you do. If you grew up, like I I've

Dick DeBartolo (02:37:45):
Heard it.

Leo Laporte (02:37:46):
<Laugh> have you, have you heard it? Is it on your driver's license or do you make it up? Yeah, no, no, they're good. Yeah. <Laugh> 50 years, five decades. He's been a stalwart at mad magazine. And also of course the match game. He saved the match game. And he, we are lucky enough to have as a gizmo wizard. Hello? Dickie, D

Dick DeBartolo (02:38:10):
Leo. Good to see you pal tonight. The final silent disco, because the summer is ending. So I, so

Leo Laporte (02:38:18):
Where do you go? So you're in Manhattan. You're in Manhattan. You, you put the headphones on and they

Dick DeBartolo (02:38:22):
Were, yes.

Leo Laporte (02:38:23):
You and Dennis do this, right?

Dick DeBartolo (02:38:25):
Exactly. Lincoln center did it like every once a month. Wow. And they do it on the pier at 70th street and the Hudson river. That's the best. Cause you're out in the river and you wear headphones. You

Leo Laporte (02:38:38):
Have to wear your hip waders.

Dick DeBartolo (02:38:40):
<Laugh> no, unfortunately the dock is above water. It's something new they're trying this year.

Leo Laporte (02:38:45):
Okay. <laugh> that sounds like fun. So this is the last one.

Dick DeBartolo (02:38:51):
Yeah. Don't the last one for this year.

Leo Laporte (02:38:53):
Is it weird? When you get there because you don't hear music, right?

Dick DeBartolo (02:38:57):
No, it's weird. The, the weirdest is Lincoln center. When, when the bus goes by, you see people, all a thousand people at Lincoln center and not a sound. They, they have a, they have another concert going on with a band and they don't interrupt each other. Cause the disco goes quiet

Leo Laporte (02:39:14):
And you're all wearing. You don't

Dick DeBartolo (02:39:15):
Hear the fans band. Yeah, because you're wearing headphones. It's it's it's really

Leo Laporte (02:39:19):
Great. That sounds like so much fun. Well, have a great time. The last silent disco is coming up. Meanwhile what's what's

Dick DeBartolo (02:39:27):
Meanwhile, Leo, everybody is going to conferences. So while you guys, well, at least MIkah was at apple. Yeah. I was at Bowes on, on the very same. Yeah.

Leo Laporte (02:39:38):
You know, you've been going to these Bose events since I'm on Bose. Yes. Ran the company

Dick DeBartolo (02:39:43):
Way back. I, I, I had lunch with them twice at one at these events and they they're carrying on without him. Well, what's great about Bose is unlike CES and stuff. Bose sort of sets aside like eight hours and you pick a half hour and you go in, you can show up earlier, late and they have drinks and food. If you're early and you can stay and, and they just do 12 peop 12 people at a time. It's

Leo Laporte (02:40:11):
Interesting that they did this the same week. Apple announced their updated AirPods pro direct competitor to the quiet comforts, right?

Dick DeBartolo (02:40:19):
Oh, absolutely. But the demo was, was so great. So you, 12 people go in at one time and you put on these, these would

Leo Laporte (02:40:27):
Be good for the silent disco. Come to think of it. Oh,

Dick DeBartolo (02:40:29):
It'd be great. Yeah. So now these are called quiet comfort earbuds too. So you put them on and the app tells you whether you have them on the best way they can. It'll like Dennis had a check for his right ear and a guy walks around and says, you know, your left ear. And he says, oh, you know what? Your ears are slightly different. Anyway, they fixed him up. Do

Leo Laporte (02:40:52):
You change the, the tips or

Dick DeBartolo (02:40:53):
You just that's what they did. They said, you know, you'll just do this once. See, this

Leo Laporte (02:40:57):
Is the hardest thing with all of these earbuds or many of them. Not all of them. Yes, yes. The EarPods don't. But the EarPods pro come with these tips, silicone tips, and you gotta pick one that's right for your ear, but you have to do it yourself. You have to go. Well, that sounds good. No, that's better. And this is cool so that they will tell

Dick DeBartolo (02:41:14):
You, so the app, the, yes, the app will give you a quick test. Oh well it's MIkah wearing them already. <Laugh> it does gotta look like me. Yeah. A little bit, a little bit, a little bit. So what they do for the demo is you do that and then they place some music and, and overhead. It says, please go to the mode where you can also hear me talk over your music, the aware mode. And then they say, go back to the music mode, the noise reduction mode. And you're listening to music and suddenly all around the room, you see projections of subway, trains. And I'm thinking, what is this? Yes. And then the projection says, take your earbuds out for a second. Yeah. You take them out. There are roaring screaming

Leo Laporte (02:42:02):
And you didn't hear it screaming. You couldn't hear it.

Dick DeBartolo (02:42:04):
No, you couldn't

Leo Laporte (02:42:06):
Hear it. That's good. Good test.

Dick DeBartolo (02:42:08):
That was amazing. So

Leo Laporte (02:42:10):
Apple with their EarPods pro says they've made the noise canceling twice as good. I don't know what that means. They also have adaptive noise canceling, like as you're walking around, if there's a jackhammer or noisy subway, it will adaptively cut that out. I bet you Bose is doing something similar. I bet

Dick DeBartolo (02:42:28):
You I'll tell you what they're doing because after this, you you can sit with an engineer. And so I sat with John rule, who's the lead engineer on this. He said, Dick, five years ago, we figured everybody's pretty much nailed noise cancellation. Yeah. What can we do to

Leo Laporte (02:42:43):
Bose invented? I think Bose was the first to

Dick DeBartolo (02:42:45):
Do right? They, they did invent it. Yeah, yeah. Yes. Yeah. It was. I think the government needed help with pilots, especially in battle with being able to hear, I

Leo Laporte (02:42:54):
Thought they were gonna say, we, we didn't wanna hear all the journalists at the press conferences are there's some way to tune them out. Alright,

Dick DeBartolo (02:43:01):
Pilots. So this is, this is what they came up with. They came up with something called custom tune technology, where it was when you first put the earbuds on, there's a little ping you hear. And that goes and figures out how big your ear channel is and then will adjust. Wow. What the equalization that you have set is, and it sets it for your ears. Mm-Hmm <affirmative>

Leo Laporte (02:43:27):
I

Dick DeBartolo (02:43:27):
Think, and in

Leo Laporte (02:43:28):
Theory, you can do this, but you have to use, you have to have a modern iPhone and you aim it at your ear. And I don't know anybody who's ever done this, but it models your ear and then tells the earbuds what shape this all is contained in the head. Headphones. You don't need any speech.

Dick DeBartolo (02:43:43):
Oh, okay. Okay. Well, this is once, once you have the tight seal, then that little sound goes off and customizes it too. And I think that's maybe why they could have all that loud noise going in the room. That's amazing. Not real. Yeah. Yeah. It's it's, it's pretty neat. Yeah. they're coming there in Vago until Thursday. They're gonna be 2 99 and they're just called quiet comfort earbuds too. I was very impressed with them.

Leo Laporte (02:44:14):
50 bucks, more than the iPhones. I mean the, the air Budds and I just bought the earbuds and I'm wondering if I should compare them to the, I don't wanna spend another 300 bucks. I have so many air Budds. How do these compare? You recommend a few weeks ago, the anchor sound core earbuds. And I know a lot of our listeners bought 'em cuz you recommended them.

Dick DeBartolo (02:44:33):
Yeah, no, I, I think they're great now I don't have these yet to compare

Leo Laporte (02:44:38):
Them.

Dick DeBartolo (02:44:38):
Ah, so we can't, I, I just know from the demo. Okay. You know, we all wore them. What, what I was particularly impressed with is how they can block out outside noise if you want. And then of course on the street, just make sure you're in aware mode. So, you know, what's going on around you.

Leo Laporte (02:44:57):
Well, honestly the reason Bose took off is because business travelers, it's so fatiguing to hear this jet noise for four or five hours flying across the country. They, and, and for a while, every airplane, everybody had Bo's headphones all the way down. Yes, everybody. Yes.

Dick DeBartolo (02:45:17):
Right?

Leo Laporte (02:45:18):
Yes. There's been a lot more competition ever since, but it'd be interest in.

Dick DeBartolo (02:45:22):
Absolutely. Absolutely. And I think that what's, the engineer was saying is that we've had to now do something else to try and distinguish ourselves. Sure. Since everybody caught it's

Leo Laporte (02:45:32):
Competitive. Yeah. But am Omar, Boes invented them.

Dick DeBartolo (02:45:35):
Okay. Way

Leo Laporte (02:45:35):
Back when yeah. Find out more of Dick's website, G I Z w Iz dot B Iz, click, click the button that says the GIW visits.
