Today Nest's co-founder and head of engineering, Matt Rogers, announced in a blog post the Nest Developer program - which allows third party developers to interact with Nest devices via lights, appliances, fitness bands and cars, with Mercedes-Benz, Whirpoool, and Jawbone being some of its first partners. Also, starting in the fall, Google will become "works with nest" certified so that by Using Google Now, a homeowner could turn up the airconditioning, just by saying "ok google, turn up the a/c" as part of the “Works with Nest” developer program, which relies on the sensors within Nest’s products... motion detection and machine learning are all available for use by other gadgets. Now, if sharing data about when you're not home or your laundry cycles with Google is a privacy concern, Rogers says that Users will have to opt in for their information to be shared, and that “We’re not becoming part of the greater Google machine." / Bloomberg is reporting that Apple suppliers in China will start production of not one, but two, iPhones that are larger than the current 4-inch screen of the iPhone 5S, citiing soures familiar with the private plans. One model reportedly will have a 4.7-inch display, and a 5.5-inch version is also being prepared for manufacturing and may be available at the same time. The new iPhones are said by sources to be rounder and thinner than previous models, and that production of the 5.5-inch model is more complicated than the smaller version, which slows down production, something that needs to be ironed out before manufacturing volume can be increased. / In other Apple news, ABC News is launching a new Apple TV channel today, with access to live and on-demand content, including local news in select markets and access to five decades of historical footage from ABC's archives. ABC News is only available to users in the United States for the time being, although ABC says availability will expand worldwide "in the coming weeks". Several other new channels have appeared on Apple TV as well today, including PBS Kids, AOL On, and Willow, a sports channel covering cricket. / The Wall Street Journal reports that Amazon.com and Warner Bros. are nearing a resolution on their current pricing dispute, which had halted preorders on upcoming movie discs. In what points to a settlement, Titles like "300: rise of an Empire" are being offered for pre-order again. However, on the book side, Amazon has also blocked customers from preordering many books from book publisher Hachette, and has delayed shipment of others during pricing talks. Last week, German book publishers filed a complaint with the country’s antitrust authority against Amazon, accusing it of violating competition laws. The complaint was formally announced today in response to Amazon delaying shipments of titles from publisher Bonnier, in a dispute over dividing revenue from e-book sales. Germany is Amazon’s largest market outside the United States. with 2013 earnings in the country reaching $2.6 billion dollars. If Amazon is found guilty of violating German competition law, it could be fined or ordered to change its policies. / Oh and those Amazon drones delivering all your dvds and books and paper towels to your doorstep? Yeah no. The Federal Aviation Administration has stated in an FAA document, published by the Federal Register, that the company may not employ drones to deliver packages, at least while the question of whether or not commercial drone operation is legal remains unclear.. The FAA says commercial operation of drones is illegal. However, A federal judge ruled back in March that the FAA enacted the regulations illegally because it didn't take public input before adopting the rules, which is a violation of federal law. Flight regulators have appealed the decision, saying commercial useage is still barred. In the meantime, in the document which included the category "Delivering of packages to people for a fee." A footnote reads "If an individual offers free shipping in association with a purchase or other offer, FAA would construe the shipping to be in furtherance of a business purpose, and thus, the operation would not fall within the statutory requirement of recreation or hobby purpose."
